What would it take to build a 300 WHP MR2 that would be track day reliable?
By track day reliable I mean drive 3+ hours to track day, beat on the car for five 20 minute sessions, then drive it home without the likelihood of needing AAA.
I’m guessing it would be cheaper to start with an NA model and build it than start with a turbo which are more expensive to find. How hard/expensive is it to get decent power out of a Toyota motor, specifically on that will bolt up easily to the MR2.
Yeah, I’m not in a real big hurry to do this, just thinking about it right now. If I did do it I’d look for a southern car or maybe even a southern roller to start with. The days of having any desire to work on salt riddled northern car are long behind me. Spent way too much time wrenching on rust with my old autocross Fiero.
Not really. I want another mid-engined toy, don’t feel like getting another Fiero, and the exotic brands are way too expensive for a 3rd car/toy especially if I want to track and break stuff.
And why the ew?
Something like that, with a little less front lip.
Jay, these cars are absolutely incredible platforms, I have driven so many cars in my life, exotic and all, and still to this day, the 1st and 2nd gen. MR2’s are among the most pure sports cars out there. They’re unreal, and obv. I’m baised, but only bec. I think they’re that good. But, no one’s paying my to say that either. I have an absolute ton of connections in the MR2 world, so feel free to contact me. In fact, my good friend just swapped a Camry V6 (N/A, 200 HP) into his 1991 MR2, and it’s for sale. Car’s awesome. Plus, you’re welcome to come check mine out anytime.
to the OP, idk the exact ratings for bottom end strength, but most cars are able to handle 7-8psi with an intercooler, i would think it would put ya at like 250 crank
Temporary, didn;t have 300 for a set of new OEM mirros. I do now though…I only buy from the dealer…
Mike, the 3S-GTE is an iron block/aluminum head, and can take a lot of boost. Many guys I know are well over 300 at the wheels on stock internals, no issues…
They’re mid engine and rwd… the way the car gods intended it to be.
I really miss the total concentration it took to keep from spinning my MR Fiero when driving it on the edge. I have NEVER looped the GTO on the street, autocrossing or at a track day and I think it’s because once you learn to recover from the nano-second lift throttle snap oversteer of an MR driving anything else is just too easy.
I hear that man, I’ve driven so many MR cars now, the thought of spinning anything else out seems impossible. In any event, stay in touch Jay, would be happy to show you the MR2 ropes…
