My Build Thread LS1/FD Its Fast!

I really want to check this thing out in person, just to look at the work.

Yeah im not too sure on that. JD will have to clarify.

I have never gone to a car show in my life…bigger then a few guys meeting in a parking lot or something. But I plan to bring the car around this season as 1. I want to drive it and enjoy the car community and 2. PEOPLE BEST BE ADMIRIN MAH BUILD! haha but really feel that it would be a shame for me to just park it and drag it like I did last year.

alot of guys run the flex in the ypipe to aid in alignment, however id rather the y pipe be more structual then anything else, and i managed to weld everything up with minimal movement soe fitment is still great at the vbands.

u redid the downpipe after removing the coils, i just wasnt comfirtable leaving them there with the heat. downpipe is done and im ready to start fabbing the exhaust as soon as i get a flex section.
the downpipe was super difficult because of the angle of the rear spark plug and the clearance. lil close to the fire wall but we can always “move” that a lil bit.

Thats right look how fucking clean that underside is. WASSSSAAAAAA John put up some full underside pics!

Shit, now I have to order some valve covers without the mounts on them for a cleaner engine bay look. This is no biggie I kinda wanted to relo the coils anyhow.

what color are you going on all the piping?

no clue

considering the motor is gold, do the piping some awesome purple, maybe like an anodized. I’m sure newman can help you pick some colors.

I might just do brushed stainless. I like stainless.

looks fucking awesome, doing a great job on this

I think a flex section would be a good idea in the cross over. The main reason for them on oem setups (other than mfg variation) is that over time thermal expansion and vibration may cause the welds to fail. It will likely be just fine without it too.

Dan

gonna need some ceramic action… www.nitroplate.com awesome southerners to work with.

What do you find in ceramic coating vs. wrapping it? Which one do you think will keep temps down more? I would think both but I think if I pay to have them coated I would probably like to look at it.

Thanks jnky

Dan,

I will ask JD about that.

wrap is only going to hold up so well long term, I’d ceramic everything, and wrap the DP by the v/c and jacket the hot side to cut down on collateral damage.

I might go ceramic on the downpipe since it is so visible, wrap the crossover, blanket the turbo, Then on the charge pipes I can do something cool but I honestly like the look of stainless so I want to find somewhere local to do a satin-brushed finish. I don’t want full polished.

yes, however the amount of miles and action this thing will see will be minimal compared to what a 100k mile DD so i wasnt too concerned. I matched up the mild manifolds to mild vband halfs and the other halfs are 304 to match the crossover, so hopefully the major thermal expansion and contractions will accur at the vband connection itself. However if there are issues we can always throw something in there.

again, i think thermal coatings are great for show cars that barely see any kinda driving. I hear too many horror stories of flaking and issues with coatings after people spend tons of money. For regidity wrap gets my vote, and its easily replaceable at an affordable price. plus i love the way the lava wrap looks. I think it would look great mixed with the current color scheme.

i dont know how much drew will love the coating after he bumps the downpipe and it chips, because things are super tight in the bay. Ive always liked wrap over coating though. just my personal preference. i think the wrap keeps things cooler, regardless what other people say. Ive got the hotside of my turbo coated and after a couple flash rusts from a year or so of boosting you would never of known it was coated. so now the turbo is wrapped.

Nitroplate is cheap for ceramic, and will warranty their stuff, I’d coat it all, wrap what’s going melt bad things, fitted blanket the turbo and powdercoat all the charge goods. at a minimum coat the manifolds to keep the iron from looking terrible after a week. I do agree wrap is better for heat retention, but coating keeps things pretty…

Great progress…

This. Sometimes clean is better than flair.

Needs more pink.

wasnt realy motivated to do much today. kidna getting burnt out lately. nothing on this car is nearly as easy as it looks and its starting to take a toll on my patience, however progress is nice and every day i chip away at it a lil bit more the closer i am to getting this thing back to drew so he can get this thing back together.

BOV installed
