Your knee is sort of encased in a sack. The swelling is pooled blood. That’s why you should keep it elevated as high as your heart as much as possible. Ice 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Don’t use heat. That’ll just make the swelling worse.
The blood will get reabsorbed on its own. One of the times I fucked mine up I actually had it drained. The doctor shoved a big needle to what felt like the middle of the joint and sucked out like 100ml of blood, which was almost half of the blood pooled. It felt better, but hurt like a bitch. Not worth it. The other two times I just waited for the swelling to go down on its own.
Aside from the pressure, does it hurt to bend? If so, that’s probably good because it’s probably just a bruised or slightly torn ligament (read: sprain.)
A torn meniscus or broken articular cartilege doesn’t really hurt to bend, it just bled and swelled a lot, locked my knee sometimes when the chunk got in the way. I remember riding the bus home from school one day after the 2nd time I fucked it up. We weren’t positive that I needed surgery. Then I felt a chunk of cartilege the size of a thick quarter floating under the skin in my knee. Fucking creepy feeling. It’s actually called a joint mouse, because it’s akin to a mouse running around under a carpet like in Looney Tunes cartoons. I got off the bus and had my mom call to schedule the surgery. All just arthroscopic though. In/out in one day.
So yeah, stay off it as much as possible. Ice 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. no heat. Keep it elevated. Then once it gets better go easy on it for a few months. If it gives you chronic problems or if you can’t get to the point of walking comfortably quickly then it’s time to see an orthopedic doctor. You may have torn something that needs repairing.
Grams had a swollen blood vessel removed in her head…the retard doctor didnt put the clamp on properly causing her to have a stroke and his only response was that he was sorry and this never happens and he guessed he could have used a better clamp.
And when I was 13 I had surgery on my neck to remove swollen lymph nodes and I still dont have feeling in my right shoulder 14 years later even tho I was told it would be about a month.
i can use it to walk but if i dominate my weight to that side I will fall over and lose my balance so I can gingerly put weight on it for about 1 second as I take a step

Do you fall over because it hurts and your reflexes take the weight off or because it isn’t stable?
It hurts to bend but not an immense pain…more of a difficulty because of the swelling and then I get a sharp pain down the side of my leg near the knee if I put weight on it.
BTW, and unstable knee is most commonly attributed to an ACL injury of some sort…And ligaments will not heal on their own.
Obviously none of us are capable of diagnosing your injury, but if you have health insurance, go to the doctors.
As for pain, go with Ibuprofen. 600-800mg’s every 6 hours or so should be a safe amount if only taken for a short period of time as well. It will reduce the swelling as well.
Disclaimer - I am not a doctor, I just regular load up on painkillers during the winter to be able to keep skiing thru the pain.
I could make a guess, but in all that is good judgement: GTF to a doctor.
If you have a torn ligament or broken cartilege, you need to get it repaired or you could be just walking along one day then POP! It’s probably just a sprain, but don’t take the chance. Knees are a LOT easier than head and neck. It’s probably just a bad sprain that will fix itself with a few days of ice and elevation, but the piece of mind is worth it.
If you’re skeptical about getting a bad doctor, go to Dr. Paul Peartree in Rochester. He was one of the best orthopedic surgeons 10 years ago when he was taking care of me, and now he’s got 10 more years of experience. If my knee ever gives me more trouble I’ll be going back to him.
You’ll thank yourself when you’re not walking with a cane at 40 because you wouldn’t go see a doctor when you fucked up your knee in your 20’s.
Get to a doctor. Odds are it’s a sprain, but really, do you want to risk it not being, and it never healing (because ligament damage cannot heal.) and having issues walking for the rest of your life?
I can understand where your mindset is coming from, but look at how many people go to the doctor every day with injuries and get fixed up and can resume their lives normally…
The irony of all this is here I am telling someone to go to the doctor when I should be at PT myself. (Dislocated shoulder in March, some sort of rotator cuff damage as I still cannot throw a ball overhand with any force. Side-arm, yes. Overhand results in severe pain.)

I’ll eventually get to PT for it.

you’ll eventually discover what a huge mistake you made and you be sorry. trust me i know, i did it and my shoulder has never been the same since.
