or any other body part? i messed my knee up pretty good tonight in the terrain park at kb and its not looking so good. my brother dislocated his knee 2 years ago and they ended up draining fluid out and im hoping thats not going to happen to me. tell your story, i want to see what im in for.
Well I dislocated my knee cap and tore my quad muscle a bit back in november. I had the fluid drained off 2 days after and as much as it hurts get it done. I was able to flex it alot more and felt alot less pain. Recovery so fars been good, its been 2 mos i went to PT and worked it there and Friday i went ice skating. Now and then i get a buckling sensation in the joint but it comes an goes and doesnt really hinder my ablility to walk or climb ladders. You wont like stairs immediately it takes more muscle to go down then up. If they offer you the "shot " take it it will help. And if they offer pain killers take them sometimes recovery sucks, or at least you could turn a small profit (if they are good pills). If you want docs to goto i reccomend Buffalo Orthopedic Group , Dr ostemposki in specific. And get a MRI this way you know EXACTLY what is the issue. It could be different.
IIRC there was a thread about this recently.
Anyhow, yeah. I broke pieces of cartilege off of my femur on the knee end 3 times during high school. Broken cartilege bleeds, so I wound up with a sack full of blood for a knee each time.
The first time they drained it so they could examine it better since they didn’t know what they were dealing with. It involved shoving a needle pretty deep, which hurt like a mother, but it was worth it because it felt way better after they took off like 90cc of blood. There was still plenty left (my knee was still fat and squishy), but it helped. Your body will naturally reabsorb the blood, but draining it can make it feel way better faster and it will make the exam a bit easier.
Is your knee fat and squishy?
yeah dude go to the hospital, id drive you, but… :-*
i am almost positive this was covered not too long ago. i don’t really care enough to search for it though. you need to spend less time on your knees little guy.
edit: damn, fry beat me to it.
Eh I personally wouldn’t bother. A fucked knee doesn’t need “immediate” treatment. Ice & elevation, then call your general doctor tomorrow. I only say call your general doctor because most insurance companies require a referral from your general doctor to be able to see an orthopedic doctor.
well i didnt do a search, my bad. and i would go to the hospital, but i dont currently have insurance and slanging pizzas certainly isnt going to pay for this to happen right now.
fry- yes its a slight purple color. lol it looks pretty disgusting right now. i twisted it last night and tonight i landed from about 15 ft and i thought i felt it pop, but didnt think anything of it, mind you, i had a few beers in me. so i get home tonight and get all my gear off and sure enough, the pain is slowly comming back, so im icing it and put my leg on a pillow.
Here’s the key question:
Did you hear/feel a pronounced “pop” when it happened?
well i couldnt hear anything because i had my headphones on, so thats a no on the hearing. i definately felt a pop, but im thinking that if it dislocated, i would be in much more pain right now, knock on wood.
sounds like you found your solution: start drinking more beer. seriously though, this doesn’t sounds nearly bad enough to need to be drained. just wait and see how your vagina feels tomorrow. i mean knee.
So it’s fat and squishy and you heard a pop?
That’s happened to me 4 times. 3 out of 4 times I needed arthroscopic surgery. Hopefully you are in the lucky 25%.
Well I’m just another online doctor wannabe so take my advice with a grain of salt:
Since you don’t have health insurance, just do ice and elevation. Ice 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours. Get that inflammation down and out. For the love of God do not put heat on it. That’s only for sore muscles. Something is bleeding, thats why it’s fat and squishy and purple. The good news is that all that will reabsorb on its own. Probably take a week. Ice and elevation. Keep your knee above your heart as much as possible.
Go very easy on it for a week or two. If it gets better on its own, count your lucky stars because you probably just had a sprain. If it doesn’t get better or you get what I had (more on that later) or it randomly locks on you, then you will need a doctor.
So, how did I know which times I needed surgery? Well the first time they didn’t know what was wrong with me. At first they thought torn ACL, then they thought torn menicus, so they scoped me to repair the meniscus. They got in there and found the meniscus was fine but there was a piece of cartilege the size of a quarter just floating around my knee.
The second and third times I knew because after the swelling went down I could occassionally feel a hard lump of cartilege sticking out under my skin. Gross feeling. It’s called a “joint mouse” because it’s like a mouse running around under a carpet like in old cartoons.
Good luck. Ice, elevation, be easy for a few weeks. Hope it’s just a sprain.
well maybe you should come over and rub it a little maybe give it a kiss?! and  on the beer drinking thing, iv already started. i emptied a 6 pack to the ledge outside my window and im watching mr. woodcock. hopefully its not too serious, because i definetly dont need to be out of commission right now.
thanks for the advice Fry, ill def be icing it tonight, but its back to grind tomorrow. im just going to try and get some sleep and hopefully it goes away by the morning, but i doubt that will happen.
Fry’s got is exactly right; he his all the good points.
I’ve got 2 “bad” knees, one that’s already been repaired and one that still needs it. Ice, and elevation, as well as an anti-inflammatory (Advil) take care of most situations. Give it a couple days and take it easy, stretch when you can, and move it when you can. Don’t pushing it too hard though, if it starts hurting, back-off.
If it’s not better within a couple days, or at least showing significant improvement, then I’d definitely suggest a DR.
No shit… This happened to me Saturday night. I was playing pool and my knee gave up on me. I went home instead of going to hospital and next morning my knee was fucking huge.
I decided to go to the ER and they told me i had torn ligament <–spl?
Im on crutches now and taking meds for pain and swelling <–spl? sucksssss
I have to go see a “bone specialist” tomorrow.
Isn’t it cool how you can push on one side and the other side sticks out farther?
wow, mine looks just like that! Same knee too, man i hope i dont have to go through all that. im praying that i wake up tomorrow and the swelling has gone down.
secks?
Mine is a lot better now. Those pics were taken a couple mins ago. It was redishblueish yesterday and looked a lot worst.
Im taking ibuprofen 800s for swelling and lortabs 7.5s for pain
sucks though. I cant do shit.
