My sponsored 78 shovelhead build thread

I have a few pictures. I’ll post them all together in one update.

. Thanks dude. I’m pretty stocked with it. Just need to make a rear trans mount and then I can start welding. The Bridgeport is pretty tied up at the moment, so I am going to try to re-use the existing parts.

Lookin goood.

Dan

if you ever need a hand working on this thnk, don’t hesitate to ask me…I’m right around the corner…

Thanks dude. I’ll let you know. I often work best alone, though.

such a sloppy fit…

Mark knows how to bend and weld very well. Even took some machining classes to build on his talent.
He has skills and could prolly whip up some nice handle bars for ya if u wanted?

Here’s some info about the trans rebuild…

Here’s how it started, a little leaky, dirty, oily, with a rachet top.

In order to get the drive gear off I made this ultra-deep socket with a centering pilot and saved myself 60 bucks:

Most of the stuff in the transmission was in pretty good shape. The main drive gear bearing, however, was totally whooped and it took out the mainshaft. The clutch rod throwout bearing was disintegrated, but none of the parts were in the gearbox… so they must have been blown apart for a long time.

I was given a brand new main drive gear that already had the bushing in it. I bought:

Baker N1 jockey top (shift pattern is N-1-2-3-4)
New mainshaft
Full rebuild kit (included countershaft and shift shaft)
Every bearing inside
Throw out bearing kit
Shifter alighnment tool
Adjustable hand reamer for kicker clutch gear bushing and kicker bushing

Had to make some more tools to R&R the bearings and seals. The tools I made are on the right. Just a few of the parts I replaced are on the left

Here’s the case with everything removed:

Then I dropped it off to jesse at blastoffny.com to have it soda blasted, then I put it all back together:

Now I have a nice clean, good-as-new transmission!

looks good, no paint?

Nah. Decided to keep it raw. I think it looks more burly and mechanical this way.

for sure

Got the frame 90% welded and out of the jig. Thanks for the help with everything, jay. There are some welds we couldn’t hit while in the jig, so need to finish those up and cap the tubes at the dropout. Otherwise, it’s sweet as hell.

Have you ever ridden a hardtail?

It isn’t bad for extended periods of time^^ But your tailbone can ache pretty bad after a while.

Only a few times.

my hardtail rode better then my lowered swing arm bike. Solo seats have come a long way these days whether its mounted with a shock or springs. Im assuming the frame isnt done on the bottom where there is some pretty severe undercut? probably where it was jig’d. lookin good otherwise. any idea on the seat yet?

Finished welding the frame up. Added caps to the tubes where they meet the dropout. Didn’t get a chance to put the wheels on. Hopefully tomorrow.

Looking good

Some stuff happened… This is a tank off an old BSA. Might use it, might chop it up, might use something else.

Focusinprogress helped me install the rear tire onto the rim. Just used a GARBAGE BAG. No tools… IT WORKS

I like the tank.
