My sponsored 78 shovelhead build thread

Wow, I really like that ‘dual’ tank idea. never noticed that. Might do that on my build…

The head can be repaired.

OK. After returning from idaho it was hard to get motivated to return back to work…

But the first thing I completed was building a new rear section for my buddy’s cb550:

Before:

After:

Next I decided to make a nice rubber fuel tank mount. Since I am running an in-tank electric pump i need it to be fairly isolated from vibration. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. There was a mounting hole in the BSA tank already so I decided to capitalize on it. I will use something slicker and lower profile than a hex bolt and washers to mount it. I will also put some thin rubber on the bracket to act as a scratch barrier on the painted tank.

Thanks for putting the work in on my bike, both look great!

How long does it take to get back up to where you started? How do you get back there?

You climb up the cliff under the bridge. It’s 500 feet. Takes 12 minutes if you’re hauling. 20 if you go slowly. Miles Dasher does it in 7 minutes. He’s an animal. There is also a trail that you can hike out, but then you need a ride. Take a lot longer.

I was sort of down while waiting for some simple parts. I’m hoping to have a new downpipe flange today so I can start making the last of the exhaust.

I also got some silicone elbows and a carb adapter from the INTERNET. The elbow needs to be trimmed down, obviously. I also got a small turbosmart compact blow off valve for a Nissan GTR. I may modify the mounting flange a bit.

Caught a quick look of that Honda yesterday while on Elmwood , couldn’t stop was meeting some peeps up to ride but it looks awesome from what I saw, who’s is it?

Finish this thing! lol

Ti-86 or 89?

I hope it’s an 89.

83+

I can’t remember which model but I sold one to Newman years ago. Who knows!

Bike looks great. Any news on the head?

Head is fixed because I bought some baller new heads (w/ 3 bolt flanges instead of 1 bolt)

Well aren’t you special on both accounts. Ha.

Made use of the parts I got in yesterday. Attached the carb and made some charge piping. (obviously the rusty hose clamps are temporary)

Then I took the BOV apart and made the flange smaller. Drilled and tapped some holes in it and cut the ends off. Always funny when you get a brand new bolt-on part and the first thing you do is take it apart and start cutting.

Here is roughly where I want to put it:

So then I made a flange (from scratch) and welded it on. I made a tiny tiny coped pipe stub to make it fit nice. The hole in the flange is oversized compared to the port in the BOV, allowing me to weld it on from the inside:

And here’s a few completed shots:

And with the contrast and brightness juiced up a bit, just because i love this shot:

really coming along nicely

Looks really good.

Nothing seems too large (wide) or out of place, which is awesome. Lots of shit in a little space.

Dan

split tank…turbo…love it

I love that helmet you got. Get one of these as a backup.
