Not completly true. If the vehicle is a sedan, the side rear windows must be 70% or greater (same as the fronts). I know this since the cop took measurents on my front and rear side windows on my SHO.
i think the cop may have been pulling your chain. but then again thats only because iv never seen anyone get a ticket for their rear windows. i thought the law only applied to the front windows. maybe someone can correct me if im wrong?
the only window legal to tint in nys is the back window…
why do you all complain about not knowing the laws? just look em up: http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/NY/
You are new here, so you don’t understand that every just likes to piss and moan about the cops targeting them for this reason and that reason (see: sedlmeier101)
Are you serious? Stop posting stupid shit like this…you have nothing to back up your ‘facts’ with other than saying ‘i thought’. You are obviously wrong so take a break with spreading rumors.
I have received a tint ticket for both my front and rear windows. Get your facts straight. Also I just went to court and told them they were removed, they never came out to check, they just dropped the tickets.
i just got a tint ticket the other day by a state cop. he told me the only window allowed is the rear nothing else he said i could spray paint the back window black if i wanted and it would be fine. but he said the stupid thing is if you put a sticker on a back window thats not allowed. so i can spray paint it black and be fine but if i put a simple sticker or banner on the bnack window it becomes illegal. he told me yes
he lied.
unrelated , do, u actually have a 93 cobra?
untrue
70% on front or rear side windows, no limit on rear glass.
you sure about the rear glass?
too much speculation in this thread, here is the exact law:
What are the laws in NYS about tinted vehicle windows?
Answer
Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow a windshield or front side windows that are dark. The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light. Seventy percent or more of the light from the outside must pass through the window. This law also applies to the rear window unless the vehicle has outside rear-view mirrors on both sides. The mirrors must give the driver a full and clear view behind the vehicle.
If the vehicle is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible, the rear side windows must also allow at least seventy percent of light from the outside to pass through the window.
It is illegal to sell, offer for sale, or install glass that does not comply with this law. It is illegal to operate a vehicle with glass that does not comply with this law.
If a medical condition requires a person to have tinted vehicle windows, they can request an exemption from the law. Request form MV-80W from a DMV Office or Call Center.
The text of this law is attached below under “File Attachments”.
hmm I thought there was a law on the rear as well, guess not. Carry on…
Yeah, the guy I bought my Jetta from had tints already installed, I was pulled over the day I bought it (more because of the temporary inspection sticker) near Binghampton, and he told me they were illegal, but no ticket because I had just bought the car.
At the court I am at, you cannot just pay the fine. You have to have them removed. Which sucks. The cop was being a dick, because he gave me two ticekts. One for each window. Driver and passenger.
