Sounds like your friend wants basic reliable transportation.
If you look up “the opposite of basic reliable transportation” on google, I believe you will find the picture of that car, or another DSM just like it.
Honestly, I think DSM’s get a worse rep than they deserve. Stock for stock, sure a civic is going to be more reliable. But I don’t think stock dsm’s can be that bad. The problem is no one on here buys a dsm with the intent of leaving it stock. 400 HP cars that started life as 140 hp cars tend to break shit, and often.
$3900 seems kind of high for a 10 year old fwd automatic 100k mile eclipse. Other than being nice looking, there’s not much special about. I would think if he doesn’t really care, something like a Honda or a Nissan might be a better way to spend $4k. :gotme:
420A =/ 4G63, so the typical DSM reliability comments/issues don’t really apply. My old 420A ran strong with nitrous, and is still running strong with the new owner at over 100k.
I agree with what JayS said… the unreliability factor comes from tools that buy an older DSM that needs maintenance but instead of spending their money there, they go right into go fast parts and then bitch when their timing belt/radiator/ brake pads/ etc etc… break. For reliability, nothing is going to beat a honda or a toyota, but the Eclipse N/T should be ok. But he should realize that it does have 100K+ miles so maintenance work is just around the corner.
my dsm blew the head gasket 2 times. broke shafts about everytime i hammered on it. very strong engine if you take care of it. dsms break very easily if you beat on them
