Need laptop fixed

I guess the days of the computer being stepped on and tugged on by the powercord have taken it’s toll on it. I have my powercord plugged in but it’s not charging the battery, it’s not even registering that it’s plugged in. I can wiggle the cord at the area where it plugs into the laptop so I’m sure my problem is there.

Can anyone recommend a place to have it worked on?

Sounds like you need a new power jack.

This is very common with laptops, people yank on the cord and damage the jack, by jerking the connection loose or breaking the jack totally.

Try another ac adapter first to rule that out, then buy a jack on ebay and put it in yourself.

I used to fix laptops at work, they are very simple to fix, you just need some small screwdrivers, sometimes they are star hex screws inside.

Thats an example of the jacks you can buy.

Cool man, thanks!

ummmm, usually this requires some desoldering/soldering on the board

Those boards are also multilevel boards that can get ruined quite easily if an amateur tries to solder on it…take it to a pro.

yeah I will… I noticed on the pic of the ebay ad that it had soldering tabs, that I know I cannot handle. I’ll be taking it somewhere.

How much this cost to take somewhere? I have an old laptop with this same problem and would like to see it get fixed, but if its too much it wouldn’t be worth it since the laptop is fairly old.

Something like this is relatively simple, and you dont need to go to a high priced shop to get it fixed. ILC, Boxxa, and I used to do repairs on laptops and we would outsource these soldering jobs to a guy right up on Sheridan. He has a computer controlled soldering station, cant remember the number though…If they chime in its possible theyll remember the guys number.

The laptop requires being completely disassembled to get the new part installed.

I have done 50+ laptops in the last two years. Its relatively simple, but finding the AC port is the difficult part as is knowing what you’re doing with a soldering iron!

I can do it for you for $60 + the part. The part is usually 5-10 bucks.
