I’m really not a penny pincher but I will say I have a LOT going down right now.
In regards to this neice…and not even knowing that side of the family…I literally didn’t even call my brother until 9pm last night…and I had this email when I can into work art 2:30pm from my sister n law. I mean I mentioned the whole idea, yes I threw the idea out there but honestly if she is already arranging some big plans without really knowing whether I am going to KEEP the car or let it go…thats pretty rude.
lol yeah…I remember when I was at AAA and I was getting the car, she said " know don’t forget this was my mom’s old car " ( her mom is deceased ) anyway that is what prompted my call to my brother sorta.
if im not mistaken, there was 225 spent on parts and emission/inspection total. reason so cheap, i used all my connections to get shit at cost. that does not include labor obviously to fix shit.
items replaced were 2 rear coil springs, rear wheel studs (2) both front rotors, both front brake pads, 1 tie rod end, one lower control arm ball joint, valve cover gasket and cam seal.
all these parts new at advanced auto equals a tad over 325 bucks. i just called.
all data gives the following time to r&r these items-
lower ball joint- 1.1 hour
coil spring- 2.8 hours for both
tie rod end- 1.1 hour
front brakes- 1.3 hours
valve cover gasket- .8 hours
cam seal- 1.7 hours.
total hours- 8.8 hours.
figure knock off the valve cover gasket since you remove it to get to cam seal-- so 8 hours
a “cheap” shop rate imo is 50 an hour. city it is more, and foreign cars is more. so at a cheap rate, thats still 400 in labor.
so labor at 400, parts at 325, plus emission (30) and inspection(20)= $775 it would have cost the avg joe to get this shit done.
i wouldnt give it back for free, thats for damn sure. if you do, you can borrow my civic, use it for 6 months, do a bunch of maintence, then give it back to me.
haha you always come through with good info. thanks mike.
And yeah the point to it is that the car was given to me for the sake of it to go to good use and the fact that I was willing to put the time and money into it. ( its obvious that yes I have an advantage to the price of things…to an extent ) either way I did it and keep in mind that if another party would have done the same they would have been spending more to keep the car on the road than it may be worth.
The car is yours, plain and simple. They gave it to you.
With that said, I know the kind of personality that you’re having to deal with. Right now, the only way to not piss her off would be to give her the car. Even if you decide to keep it, it’ll piss her off, because she’s got that gotta have it my way train of thought. It’ll piss her off to ask her for the money that you put into it, and it’ll piss her off if you sell it.
But… It’s your car.
Sell it, make some money, and fuck her, because she’s gonna be pissed off no matter what.
I wouldn’t mind pissing off anyone that finds sentimental value in a 95 ford escort, especially extended family, despite your crack-whorish ways as of late.
Yeah I wouldn’t really mind keeping it…but there is a small possibility that I will be moving to MD at some point soon. That means the car is going to have to go…and yeah I am obviously going to be tight on money.
