It’s nice to see some track talk around here again.
Another video, playing with a different lap timer gauge. Somedude’s SLOW, er, I mean SHO makes an appearance around 8:55.
You can see the GPS really isn’t sampling enough in this one. The speed changes in huge jumps. I think I’m going to have to find a way to mount the phone closer to the windshield so it gets a clearer shot at the sky.
based on a video from last year you have me beat by just over 2 seconds. You take the kink and the 2 turns after that very differently than I do. I imagine you are driving a bit more on a cautions side since your car is much more valuable than mine. what do you use to integrate track information onto the video?
LOL those 205/50/16 BFG’s didn’t provide very much grip this time around. To be honest I found it a bit dull. usually the car really throws me around in the seat but I guess that is what you get when you go from 245/45/17 to super skinny dry rotted tires that were chunking any time I would push hard. I can’t believe it but I put a fresh set of bearings in the bitch and she is running like a champ now. I have never had that work before. I am loading up the car and heading to gingerman in a couple hours for a 2 day event. I saved my sticky tires for gingerman. I think they will be wasted after 2 days there. My brakes hold up much better if I run the bigger tires because I don’t have to brake as much for corners. With the 205’s I would take turn 1 at 72-75mph and that was about all they had but with my big ones I am in the low to mid 80’s and 86 was the fastest I have been able to take 1 and I could not quite get myself to take turn 2 flat out. I would have to lift for just a sec and get back on the power. My line had to be perfect for it to work though or I would bump the inside of the turn and get sideways
The kink it doesn’t seem to matter how you take since even without lifting at no point are you coming close to the cornering limits. I was braking to around 105-108 by the end of the day for 11 and clipping the inside curbing on 12. 13 I’ve tried about 100 different ways and there’s just no good way to carry much speed through it. You can carry a little more by giving up more on 12 to be farther outside on at the start of 13 but since 13 is so slow I’d rather carry a bit more exiting 11 and 12 and just brake to hold the inside through 13.
I get the track info into the video using Dashware. www.dashware.net It lets me combine the video with the data file that exports from Harry’s Lap Timer Pro for iPhone. You two windows for the video and the map with independent timeline sliders. You line the car on video up with a known point, like the start/finish, then adjust the map timeline to put the car dot in the same spot (it shows the start/finish as a green line on the map). Check a box that says “synchronized” and any gauges you drag on from that point just work. Harry’s supports additional sensors for things like steering input, ODBII for throttle position and brake as well as external GPS too. Dashware has built in gauges for all of that.
a cheap 5hz sampling external gps will clean up the data a bunch. I use one with trackmaster on android.
Bumping this thread up for 2013
Jay maybe you could edit the 1st post when the 2013 Fun Day schedule is up on their website
DITB have been posting about a track day
http://www.dubsinthebuff.com/forum/showthread.php?26655-Track-Day-Scheduled-Nelson-Ledges
i still only have 2 tdi’s
Will do
The following rant isn’t specifically addressed to you, but to everyone that says “my car isn’t track worthy”.
So? All that means is it will accelerate slow… but I guarantee it will be fast enough that you’ll still have to use brakes for turn 1 (so you can take it at 80-90mph). It will be fun going into a corner, the body will roll, the suspension will take a set, the tires will generate lateral acceleration and a smile will be put on your face. You’ll be able to to take the kink at full tilt which, although slower, is more satisfying than approaching it with caution.
And then the next lap you’ll try a little bit faster, stay in the gas for 10 more feet, hit your brakes 1/4 second later, turn in a little bit smoother, throttle out a little it sooner, and at the end of the day that smile turns into a shit eating grin.
The engine under your hood doesn’t prevent from learning how to look 2 corners ahead, it doesn’t prevent you from picking up sighting marks on the track, it doesn’t prevent you from learning the line, it doesn’t prevent you from being consistent. All of which are more important to being fast than opening up your wallet and buying fast.
If a full size van can be raced there, your car can track there:
If a 1961 Cadillac can be raced there, your car can track there:
If a P.O.S. Chrysler Dynasty can be raced there, your car can track there:
Pads & Fluid. Drive.
Agreed. Everyone thinks their car has to be modded to shit (or track ready from the factory) to road course. In my opinion, driving in a less than amazing car hones your driving skills a bit more.
Either way, I’m in for this at some point this year hopefully. Money is a bit tight lately so I won’t be able to afford a few Watkins track days so cheaper ones like this are perfect.
Bump for a great time! I plan on attending and am try to get some ditb peeps to go as well…

Description of Event:
FunDays were created for the person who has always wanted to experience the thrill of On Track driving but in a safe, controlled atmosphere.
If you guys pick a Sunday I’ll go.
Do you have to pre register? Any regulations for safety? I have a helmet no harness, I hope my car doesn’t have any fluid leaking i don’t know if they would care about that.
I think other drivers would prefer you don’t have fluid leaks. Coolant/oil on the track create slick conditions that can be dangerous. I don’t consider a dripping oil pan gasket to be an issue if it just drips once in a while but anything more than that- fix it.
I’d like to take my m3 to one of these fun days
Updated the first post with the info for this year.
Hopefully in for a few of these…just picked up a truck so now I need to find an affordable trailer. If not, I’ll just chance the drive.
For the people that have been…what is the level of idiots on the track? Something like these seems to be geared towards less than track-experts so I can see these being filled with a bunch of newbs who don’t know what they’re doing.
I’ve run there in A and B groups and had a good time and not had any issues with idiots.
Yeah just like the go-kart event, pst.
I’d be interested if a few of you guys want to go on a specific date.
