Ok I’m intelligent enough to realize i know nothing about this, and not fuck with it. LOL
It’s easy for us techs, not those without comp skills. Not unlike how I dunno $hit about cars and they are hard to me but easy for a mechanic to fix.
Wired ethernet will have NOTHING to do with the encryption key.
The desktop has NOTHING to do with the encryption key.
I wouldn’t suggest just turning off the wep/encryption unless you set up a mac address filter to ONLY allow your computers to connect.
I’m currently unemployed and could use some extra cash. What’s it worth to get it working?
PM if interested. It’s not something easy to talk someone through via phone/internet so a house call is more realistic. I speak from experience with my family. LOL
A few other thoughts…I would personally disable the encryption (or you could create a new passphrase since you clearly don’t remember the old one). I’m big on mac address filtering as a base layer of security.
You don’t need to install anything. You have a network that is self standing and the software is totally un-needed for the modem/router.
So explain how he gets on the linksys router with out wired ethernet??? with out the wep key?
Its pretty simple to setup, should take 2 minutes tops.
The DSL is a little harder to setup than Time Warner. You set the Westell to pass through mode, then set the DSL login and password in the router under PPPoE.
You will probably want to setup WPA over WEP anyways.
For a linksys the user name is usually blank, and the password is admin.
I have seen some other weird default passwords for the router though…
That’s why you use wired ethernet for setup.
I think you misunderstood my post.
Is there a reason your post has an attacking tone? Did I offend you in some way?

try this man  It’s a guide to enable WEP on that router, step by step. Just follow it along and you should be able to figure it out. Post back if you have any issues.
IF you can’t login to your router (forgot the user name or password), then just reset the thing (there should be a small button on the router to manually reset it back to factory spec), and follow the direction on the page above
edit: and I agree, I’d skip using WEP and use WPA for security
Look on the bottom or back of the router for the WEP key?
Get an Ethernet cable and follow what you have already written
Hit the reset (not the power) button and I think that will clear all configurations on the router.
:wtf:
I have a WRT54GL in my hand…the Serial number and Mac address are on the back not a default wep key…and im pretty sure out of the box linksys routers dont have wep enabled…
I think you are confusing it with the verizon/westtell dsl router/access points…
If you reset the linksys back to defaults you will be able to connect to it with out a WEP key…then you can just get in with admin/admin or no login name/admin via http://192.168.1.1
Congrats on that title then. Props and all.
A wireless network setup hardly requires massive IT skills. I’ve been in the IT industry for about 13 years myself and some consider me geek royalty as well. :eekdance:
I’m not looking to start a fight and was just trying to help. I at no point was an aggressor. A refresher on reading posts may be in order for some though…I never said you could set up the router over wifi without the encryption key. Attention to detail is kind of important as I see it. :roflpicard:
I’ll bail on this before it turns to a huge pissing match.
Peace
I’m not too familiar with that router…figured it was worth a try. And yes the Verizon (actiontec) routers do have the WEP key on the router…
reading this stuff i gather the router software needs to be installed on the pc, which it is not.
No you don’t need ANY software installed for that linksys router to work…
My parents just got me a computer for Christmas
no, it’s all done in the router firmware and inside of windows network connection wizard thing… you shouldn’t need any 3rd party software
just reset the modem, and follow those directions to a “T”… you should be all set
