Complete list that you could consider in that price range, as far as I can remember:
Evo, STi, 335xi, 325xi, R32, G37x, A4 Quattro, new Taurus SHO (if you can wait a while). I’d lean towards the Evo, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them. E: forgot the Volvo. Good choice, there. I say just go drive all of them you can find.
There are only so many options for a car that’s ~$40k, AWD, and fun to drive.
I thought of the G37x because it fits your criteria perfectly. Plus it’s hot, it sounds awesome, the fit and finish isn’t the most amazing, but it’s still very acceptable, it’s moddable if you get the itch, pretty reliable, decent on gas, etc.
To be honest the G37x is the car I first thought of. I’m just ignorant when it comes to the other cars in its market, especially the euro offerings. So i guess to be more specific I’m looking for opinions on cars in that particular market. And why would I want say an A3 over the G37x?
I’ll never understand this with people. There has been one day this winter where my snow tire equipped GTO had problems, and that was mostly my fault for parking on a hill where I had to pull out of the spot going up hill and couldn’t back up because of a car behind me. Had I put some weight in the trunk I’m sure I would have driven up the hill no problem.
So in trade off for AWD traction on those 2 or 3 really bad snow storm days when you might REALLY need it you carry around the extra balance effecting weight, complexity and driveline loss the other 360+ days a year.
Its not because I’ve had “problems” with my 2WD vehicles…I don’t need AWD. I just want better traction on the slick roads. I drive 50 miles a day on curvy country roads that are usually not plowed. I will see a benefit to having AWD and I think its worth the tradeoffs.
Having been in/driven one of the new evos, I would say it’s a great car for the money. If you care more about having a nice interior than actual performance, go with something a little more luxurious like the 135 or G37x.
More mature looking than the previous, but still way too aggressive if you’re going for the “business professional” look.
That was also a big reason why I bought a 9-2x and not a Wrx wagon. It’s the exact same car, but with a less aggressive hood scoop, spoiler, fenders, etc., which all amount to a more “professional” appearance.
