It’s funny when the mental image you make for someone by reading their posts turns out to be spot on.
I bet the African American slaves from like 150 years ago would all roll over in their graves if they heard people bitching about a “Nigger-Brown” couch.
Its like that old saying your grandparents use on you when youre crying about something stupid and say “back in my day I had to walk up hill both ways in the snow with no shoes on”, or “back when I was your age I was storming the beach at Nomandy with bullets zingin past my head and watched half of unit die before my eyes.”
I think its retarded that the couch’s color was named “Nigger-Brown” but there is really no reason to make such a big deal out of something so stupid.
Before I post, I’ll just say that I am known as the “liberal commie douche bag” by my friends at work.
So I will say this and only this:
People need to stop being such fucking babies and just deal with their own lives instead of trying to incite some kind of cultural revolution by bitching about pointless shit. Racism will always exist so just fucking deal with it.

Well back in the day, things like that were the norm, but then again, how would you know?
The couch had a fucked up label, who knows how it got there? The chinese made it, for a company from another country who knows what communication breakdowns happened in conveying what you wanted for specs, labels, and whatever else goes into couch making?
As long as she doesn’t try to sue the people, who cares. If that was me, and I was bothered, I’d just take it back to the store and get my refund.
Racism will always exist, you just have to deal with it. Unfortunately.
its fucking 2007. Who gives a shit. Why dont you call Al Sharpton so he can throw a media stink and get his scumbag publicity for the month.
If I was the store owner I would say “whooptie do”, sorry no reperations here.

he is busy right now with this
MSNBC will suspend its simulcast of radio shock-jock Don Imus’ morning talk show for two weeks after the host called members of a women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos,” NBC said Monday.http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/04/09/imus/index.html
2 weeks seems fair for Imus. That was a pretty bad comment. He shouldn’t be fired though.
As for the couch, I like the idea that she can bring it back for a refund if it bothers her that much. The post that she should get it for free just pisses me off.

so basically if she get’s it for free then she wouldn’t mind the couch being called x? just a thought…
I dont think any of us of as a “non-african american” race can really understand how an african american would feel reading that. True, African American slavery has been over for a long time but, that feeling of racism is still there, and when something like this happens its gotta hit deep. ALOT differnt than if we saw, “cracker white” ect.
To take it to the news and make a big deal about it though is just too much.
Race discussions are like any of the other “no final correct answer” discussions (ex. religion, abortion, ect) These pages could go on forever…no one on here is corrct. ONLY because there will ALWAYS be someone else with their OWN view of whats right.
Everyone (well, most) had good points but, some people though different. I have my own views…
oh fuck it who wants fish?!
I think she should get the couch for free. That’s all.
[/quote]
I dont think they should get anything for free. If you dont like the name on your couch, or do not like what the couch represents, return it. I would bet anything if you went thru her house or thru the house of her love ones I am sure as hell they have a CD in their collections that say the word “nigger”. Do you think she refused to go to their house because of it, not a chance in hell. Just another person in the world trying to get something for free. Doesnt matter what the color, just another person looking for free hand outs for their “wrong doings”.
Oh and by the way I was thinking about the whole “Kramer” thing when I was reading the story about the couch. I started thinking, how many black comedians called out a white guy in the crowd and said a racist word like “cracker” and made fun of the way the “cracker” was talking and had the crowd laugh at the “cracker”? Do you think the next day the black comedian went on TV and the radio and apologized for his behavior? Just something to make you think:snky:

A comedian playing off of stereotypes for a comedy act is totally different from a comedian that loses his cool and goes off the deep end.
Richard Prior and Chris Rock’s cracka references as well as some of the other comedians (white, can’t remember) who crack on hip hop, the “N” word, etc. etc. is comedy. People connect with that because they can say “Hey, I know somebody just like that” or “That reminds me of my friend/acquaintance”.
Kramer blowing his top was not comedy. Nobody connected.

I disagree with you. Black people arent the only race that have been slaves. Go read some history and see how many different races have been slaves through time. There is no “degree” of offensive when it comes to racist names. A racist comment is a racist comment no matter if it is towards a black, white, indian, asian, etc, etc, etc.
i had a disscussion tonite about the possible language error, and we were thinking what language error is there??? was it meant to be black guy brown or colored guy brown??? that isnt a language error no matter how you spin it, it sounds like it is being directed in an inappropriate way.
Things don’t translate literally. If you want proof, start translating stuff even from just Spanish or Italian to English through something like babelfish (does a pretty nearly literal translation). I wouldn’t outright discount a language barrier.
