Part of the raspyness is with the actual design of the N1, it’s a straight through muffler and inside they put another tube (not sure if this is what they do now, but it’s how they were designed when they first came out)
A chambered muffler will quieten it down and take alot of edge off the exhaust note.
I run a 3" in 2 2.50" out Brullen muffler, it’s a pretty big muffler but it’s still loud, doesn’t buzz like others do, but it’s damn loud.
2.25" is probably what you’d need, you’ll lose a bit of off line torque but gain a bit of pull uptop.
I’ve heard Magnaflow mufflers on an M5 and they sound pretty awesome, but I’m sure that has something to do with it’s state of tune and the fact that it’s a V8.
Lets be honest, we drive a 4 cylinder, there isn’t a whole lot we can do to reduce that buzz other than dropping a block of money on a muffler system. It’s just a matter of what you can live with
I thought so too, i mean they just look like a big damn tube, doesnt that kill some of the backpressure? and i’m sure the lack of a second cat will also kill even more backpressure?
i dont notice any torque loss, my car actually seems faster and i got a 17" chambered res put in this afternoon(95$installed)
and for v-specer7, i got the 2.5 because that what the exhast had when i bought it off a guy on the vboard. i would have rather had a 2.25" but 2.5 wont make alot of difference.
and what do you mean angeled down??? my car was parked on my driveway and it has a big slant, so thats probably why u think its angeled down. its actually perfectly horizontal i took a level to see what the hell u guys were talking about and its pretty much dead on horizontal.
heres a soundclip with the 17"chambered resonater. Its SOOO much quieter, didnt get rid of the buzz that much, but definatly dosnt make popcorn anymore!!! and once i get a header and get rid of my 1st cat it will open it wide up so ill have to get another res put in. its a deeper tone now, and almost stock sounding from inside the car! it also has i nice rumble at about 4000rpm’s.
BEFORE RESONATER installed^^^^^^
AFTER RESONATER installed^^^^^^^
tell me what u think! compared to the first soundclip.
sounds alot better, but i still don’t understand why it has that little rasp in it? i have a megan(N1) style muffler and it is still pretty deep, absolutly no rasp, if someone could copy my exhaust and post it i could show
but then again i plan on changing my exhaust this winter, i don’t like the look of the muffler, probabaly gonnna go borla or magnaflow with 2.50 tip, where did you go for your exhaust work? and is manderl bent?
i went to park muffler for everything. they were really good to me. installed my exhaust when i brought it in, then i came back the next day said i wanted a res. and he said 90$ no labor and just let me take w/e one i wanted. and yes it is all manderl bent.
its probably rapsy because i took out the second cat and just got a 2.5" pipe welded in so its comming striaght from my stock header. once i get rid of that ill need another resonater because it will be ALOT rapsier. if i just installed it as a catback with both my cats intact then im sure it would have been deeper.
another reason its still rapsy is because its a new resonater and once it gets broken in the tone will drop apparently(or so i was told)
Sounds a lot better than the first clip… Do find it stinks a lot without the cat? I had no cat or resonators on my old MR2 and it stunk when you stopped at a light
Yea took mine about a week before my resonator borke in. Just at the point when I was getting worried that it didn’t do anything it really mellowed down.
i still have my stock header so im still legal w/ 1 cat, and no it doesnt stink, but im sure once i get rid of that stock header it might. w/e i will be faster!!!
off topic but is a 04subaru rs faster then a spec v (both stock for comparison)? some guy on the whitmud last night was saying spec v’s are slow and bla bla, he aparently works at a nissan dealership. anywho. just wondering…
Race him and find out, make sure it is from a roll though.
Wait a min, is going catless illegal in Alberta, because I was under the ASSumption that it wasn’t. My car doesn’t stink, I can’t smell it anyways. Although it is quite a smoke show on cold morning start-ups.
well i was on my way home at 2 am from work last night and im DEFINATLY no going to race in the rain! expecially with the street tires i have, i sat at a light and i dont even need the ebrake on to do a burnout with these tires in the rain! i have such bad traction on water, anywho im pretty sure i could beat him haha spec v torque ftw!
and from a roll… yah i dont have mmi’s and every time i race someone i have to slowly hit the gas at the start to get a roll, then i just peel off. but that initial roll kills me.
and as for cats… i think its illegal but nobody in alberta checks!
im getting rid of my header soon, going for ssautochrome. no cats for me!
also as for the smoke show… who cares you cant tell the difference between moisture and smoke in the winter when you just start up the car. im not going to worry.
should i wait till after the winter or do it now?
We have no emission laws in AB, so yeah a header is leagal, just Db level is illegal over a certain point.
The spec V precat (the header cat) desintegrates and the carbon in it gets sucked back into the engine as we do not have a recirculation exhaust system, when he decelerate the engine actually causes the exhaust to get sucked back up and take the carbo with it and tick tick boom, precat fails destroys engine and cry all the way to the stealership.
Yeah throw my Turbo on your car it will make it as deep as… well the depths of hell. Sounds so good.
Not exactly. More like the ceramic dissintigrates, gets sucked back in by reversion pulses and scores the cylinder walls. Engine starts burning oil and gets worse and worse.
