i gotta agree with this, i hade a debate with my friend about the m3 how he thought the smg tranny was way better, but in reality, who are you racing when you drive? what does it matter if your car shifts faster than any human could, if that was the case than why do we even drive? might as well get a computer to do everything because its so much more accurate…
driving manual is about enjoying the car when you drive, forget about good track times, unless your buying a car to track every weekend then a real manual is the best way to go if you like drivin 5 spd, or 6 in this case,
just my oppinion tho, thats still a wicked car, and i would love to drive one
I do understand the split-second-shifting, cutting-edge technology and what not in these new “semi-auto” transmissions…and I really can appreciate it…but i’m still with the seemingly-shrinking group of the manual transmission lovers (according to the direction exotic car makers are headed).
You just can’t replace the direct feel of a manual tranny and it never gets tiring for me…the semi-autos always do.
^Can’t really watch that vid at work, but Audi’s DSG on the VW Golf outshifted Tsuchiya, and I’d like to think that he’s pretty good at driving stick.
As for the “who are you racing?” bit, clearly the guy beside you
“You might want to read the numbers again, the GTR has also beat the Z06 by 7-seconds on the Nurburgring…despite being 700lbs heavier and made of metal not plastic”
unless they are using the same driver these times dont mean much…
Ok, we are not saying a mnual will be faster around a track, it’s the opposite, the DSG or SMG will be faster, but we are talking about street driving enjoyment. A manual will always be more enjoyable on the street, and on the track. But the auto shifts faster and gives better times.
I rather get to work 3 seconds later and enjoy myself.
and even if you were goin against some other guy, isnt the whole experiance and changing gears, i mean you could be racing a 5.0 in a stock 240 and beat him if he misses a shift,
I actually posted the video as “supporting evidence” that a manual transmission might actually be faster around a track than their “semi-auto” counterparts, ironically.
As far as i know, the GTR is being made available to north american this coming spring (2008) and it will also be offered in a 6 speed manaul, a lot of the sites are saying that it will have 6 speed manual. “EDMUNDS - INSIDE LINE”.
