New Pennzoil Platinum PurePlus, made from natural gas

Anyone using this stuff yet? I’ve been using Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra (which ever is in stock) exclusively for years now and noticed this new stuff when I went to pick up some 5 quart jugs from Walmart.

I was a little concerned about trying something this new but the BobIsTheOilGuy forums seemed impressed so at the last change that’s what the GTO got.

Basically they’re making the base stock from natural gas.

I either use rotella full synthetic or schaeffers. 5-40

Cool stuff

I’ve been using the Pennzoil Platinum for a while for both my Silverado and the wife’s Cruze; worked great so far. Nothing worth noting from a wear standpoint when I cut the filters apart. Normally do the changes at about the 30-35% oil life mark; which is typically 5k-6k miles.

Didn’t really want this to be a “this oil is best” thread, because those just turn into BiTOG crap.

What’s really interesting is that they’re making the base from natural gas, something that’s never been done before.

HOUSTON — Natural gas probably isn’t running your car, but it soon may be lubricating your engine.Royal Dutch Shell has produced motor oil from natural gas, a product that is now available in stores, the company will announce Friday.
The product was made possible by Shell’s $19 billion Pearl Gas-to-Liquids facility in Qatar, where the company converts natural gas into a variety of fuels and feedstocks. Materials from Pearl are used to make diesel fuel and plastics, for example.

what’s the advantage of that?

I saw this in TV ads. I’m also curious as to technology to produce this motor oil from natural gas. That’s a pretty good alternative right there.

  1. So it’s actually changing the “gas” in your motor instead of the oil.
  2. I would assume the “old / used” oil could still be used in fuel oil furnaces just like all the others?

interesting stuff… not sure I’m going to pay more for it, but it looks like it’s the future.

I’m just surprised they built the facility in the Middle East, where oil is abundant, and not in the US where it’s all natural gas.

If anything you’ll probably be paying less, at least until natural gas prices start going up. $25 for the 5 quart jug at Walmart.

really? I assumed it had to be more than T6 at walmart… I’ll switch to this next oil change.

What is T6 about 22 for 4qt?

The price will never go down. If it’s cheaper to make, the price will stay the same and profits will go up.

I’m going to try this stuff next oil change.

That’s simple, it’s easier. You don’t have the red tape, the hippies, the NIMBYs, etc.

Also natural gas is found with oil reserves and is often just burned off instead of being captured because there is so damn much of it. Instead of lighting it on fire to get rid of it, it can be a commodity with value.

$25 for the 5qt jug?!?!?!?

I can’t find it for anywhere NEAR that cheap around here. I order a 6-pk of Quarts from Amazon for ~$40 shipped; that’s the cheapest I can get it.
