Nice post Jesse. Question though, if our check engine light is not on, can this test still be performed and produce any results?
I know OBD II stores some codes without trigguring the check engine light, but I doubt OBD I does it. Maybe in some cars, but definately not all.

Any examples of what kind of things that could come up from performing a check when the check engine light is not on, and no blatant evidence exists to lead me to believe that there is something wrong? I’m just trying to get a sense of whether it would be worthwhile for me to check this out, even though nothing ‘seems’ wrong. I could be living with a false sense of security. Then again, I might not want to know if something big is wrong :? .
