No more registration of JDM cars in ontario

Ok, time to unite all our GTR Canada members. The MTO has temporarily suspended all registration of imported vehicles from Japan. This affects everyone in Ontario currently or in the future trying to register their imported Japanese car in Ontario at the MTO. The more letters we get sent the faster we can resolve this issue for everyone.

I spoke to one of the heads in Transport Canada in Ottawa. His statement was that even though transport canada approves the car to be imported, the provincial government still has final authority over vehicle registration in the province.

The only recourse is to write a letter to the minister, and specifically request a written response to your letter. Demand a prompt resolution to the issue and clarification of the MTO registration process. Insist that it aligns with Transport Canada’s legislation. Some details to include would be a general description of your problem in registering the car in Ontario, despite having the proper vehicle export documents from Japan.

Address your letter to: Honourable Harinder Takhar Minister of Transportation M.P.P. Mississauga Centre

You can bet, just like E-testing and the changes made to it reciently that the continuing decline in domestic auto sales is the fuel for this fire… CAW, the largest employer in Ontario… Ford or GM says jump and the Ont. Gov’t does…

I think some background into the WHY this has been done is what’s required… rather then just a clarification.

if you do decide to write in, please try to be civil and professional in your conduct, as well as use proper grammar / use paragraphs, far from the behaviour shown by many on this site. we need to be taken seriously.

we need to show that we are mature and responsible people with a passion for cars, and that this halt on import registration is only hurting those who obey the law and respect others on the road, and that the few kids who act like asses on the road do not represent us nor our values.

for more info on this issue, keep posted to the thread on GTRC.

I agree, this will have to be done in a profesional manner. They are not going to even take you into consideration if you mouth off and act like a drink 15 year old beating off for the first time to fuzzy TV porno at 3 in the morning.

it’s simple to why this is being done. There are on a good day, 300 used JDM cars comming into the country. ALL that money goes overseas to japan or Aussiland. Our government does not like that, look at how much of a hard time they give you when you try to buy something in the states.

They want our money to stay in the country. It’s not good for the economy if all these “young” people are spending 5-20000$ on cars from japan. ALL that money could be going into purchases of new cars, which in turn provide jobs AND help the economy.

You have to remember, the MTO and the government are not out to screw the enthusiast. They are looking out for the economy, one could say the greater good.

This has been a long time comming. BC, Manitoba, i belive alberta, have all instituted new legislation that requires dot head/tail lamp assemblies, day time driving lights, third brake lights and approved windscreens. Now Ontario is in on the “fun”. Quebec will be next.

Soon enough the federal Government is going to get a hold of it and we’ll see drastic changes.

It is sad to say it, and maybe i’m being pesimistic, but this is the begining of the end of the 15 year rule in Canada. I hope everyone has had there fun. I know i have.

Now lets all watch the price of the imports double like they did in the states.

On a side not, i KNOW there are ways around it, like buying it in bc, registering it there, have the vin changed and bringing it here. But this isnt about technicalities.

Thanks for posting this Lucky_Cefiro.

It would be great if everyone affected (or even potentially affected …parts cars etc) by this development do as I have and write a quick email in mature language asking for this o be reviewed further. We are a small group, and our activities hardly make a dent on the greater car buying public. Why this is happening is beyond me. I can only imagine that a few bad apples made their presence known to the wrong people and now the guv are doing someting about it.

Thanks,

they should have done some research before implementing this law.

if they had asked the people who were bringing the cars in the liklihood of them buying domestic cars as an alternative if they could not import they would find that these people STILL would not buy domestically produced cars.

i would never ever buy a GM / Chrysler / Ford and i have ZERO interest in anything that is currently available new.

this law will not make enthusiasts buy generic cars, it will just make imported cars even more desireable.

^ F ya… couldn’t have said it better myself.

This makes me hate GM/Ford/Chev/whatever cars even more!

I’d buy a Pontiac Solstice! lol

^ Seems like a pretty decent car overall, but the interior quality is the worst I’ve ever seen of any vehicle, and I mean ANY vehicle.

Would you purchase a domestically made vehicle as an alternative to a “import” vehicle? If ‘no’ please state your name.

Just to see if we can get a list going to send out. I’ve never owned a vehicle imported from oversea’s but I know people who have and I empathize for them.

I really don’t think this will help at all

Really? Worse than a S13 interior?

^^^ Yes

Unfortunately most “imports” aren’t really imports at all. With many factories producing and assembling hondas, etc. right here in north america. Which is why the ont gov is okay with that. They still recieve a cut.

Anyway, this is still super gay.

Dude, worse than my 1987 Celica’s interior, worse than the 89 Chrysler Dynasty interior we had when we first came to Canada. The cheapness of everything in it and the shoddy workmanship astounded me. The panel gaps were dirty huge, plastics had a very… cheap feel to them, and made a very hollow sound when you tap them. The trim on the doors is what really stood out the most to me, since where the door skin is supposed to curve in to meet the glass of the window, you can see and feel a sharp edge, it doesn’t curve in all the way properly.

But then again, I’ll still defend it, b/c it’s a good, cheap RWD sportscar with good weight distribution, etc… For what they’re selling it for, they HAD to cut some corners, and I’d rather it be the interior than the chassis/suspension, etc…

I still am so happy with getting an S13…

And if there is any other car I want to get it’s the bmw 540i with M package as a family 4 door sedan and the Skyline GTR… that’s it.

I hate crappy fords, chevvies, etc… the only American car I like is the z06 corvette… and with a possible slight sliding chance of a modified mustang… as in thin ice slight.

Otherwise all the ‘family sedans’ are garbage (in my opinion).

What do we have to do and lets do it… because I do have a desire to some day get a gtr.

meh, the government still gets their taxes just like they would any other vehicle sale… + more probably
