No more registration of JDM cars in ontario

^^ Yup.

~21% in duties and taxes… they definately have their hand deeeeeep in things.

i didnt mean american cars versus japanese or european cars.

what i meant was that the people who go through all the hardship and lead times and insecurity of landing a Japanese market vehicle are not the type of people that go down to the local dealership and buy a car off the lot… no matter what brand it is.

they are connoisseurs who will still not go to the dealerships, they will find lop-holes, they will buy used cars and modify them, they will import other cars…

in the end the type of behaviour that the ministry is hoping people will exhibit will still not be exhibited by these individuals.

case in point… people like Justin, John, Paul, people that have imported cars like this before… how many of you are going to say… ah fukk it, i cant import, i’ll just go buy a toyota matrix downtown… none.

all that will happen is that the JDM cars that land in Alberta and BC will become even more valuable and the poeple that want them will just pay more to be original.

not one vehicle will be deterred.

anyone wants my car $30,000 yeeeeee

did you forget the “N” in “Yeeeeeeen”?

if so, ya sure 30gs YEN would sound like a deal.

OK so I wrote a formal letter as requested… to the email provided in the first post in this thread. and this is the response I got today:

"Dear Mr. Maiurro,

You have reached the constituency office of MPP Harinder Takhar. We do not handle Ministry of Transportation issues out of this office. However, I have forwarded your email to the appropriate person at the Ministry of Transportation Office.

Regards,

Leanna Karremans
Constituency Assistant
MPP Harinder Takhar
Mississauga Centre

^I hope that doesn’t mean a polite “we don’t give a shit” and I hope they actually ‘forward it’.

damn liberals…

the only way HE, this MPP, will notice is IF you keep sending it to his office… if it goes to the ministry… coinsider it filed in the round cabnet… ( garbage can). also send it to your own, local MP’s… if your local MP’s feel like thier getting the ass, then they will in turn pass it on to the MPP.

Exactly… they love to pass the puck. Keep sending it to this guy’s office… just because it’s his constituency office doesn’t change the fact that he’s minister of transport.

ask who the “appropriate person” is…

then send the same e-mail there, and ask who their superior is…there is a whole ton of different ranks…

so my question is…how does one get a JDM car in now? What are the loop-holes if anyone knows.

feel free to import them. all of the importers are still going full steam ahead… the people buying their cars just can’t register them. ;]

I wish the Gov’t also realises that Japan also imports domestics such as corvettes camaros etc…

in manitoba, it’s not like they banned the car persay, but they want the safety places to adhere to TC laws. they just said to make sure the cars have DOT approved lighting, reflectors and glass, and the vehicles are allowed to be modified to meet standards.

that’s how the 15 year rule works, it’s not an exemption, it’s an exception. all cars outside of RIV’s list cannot be modified to meet TC laws except for those 15 years or older.

i don’t think pressure from the big 3 has anything to do with it. it’s that cars were being passed without proper inspection, and the gov’t wants adherance. BC was the first to experience this.

IF that was the case then ALL aftermarket lighting be it fronts/rerars/sides could not be sold if it did not meet the CSA DOT certification… and anyone selling these lights would be subject to fines. When was the last time a store/warehouse/mfg. got a fine for selling/producing non DOT lighting.

earlier ricer 'euro’s ’ were subject to ticketing becuse they did not have a passive reflector soruce in them… now most do and they are ‘technicaly’ fine.

This is something different. the fact that it’s Japanese cars only, not european cars, is playing a role in there somewhere…

But this is all speculation until some smart soul decides to investigate the why’s and how come’s of this ‘ban’…

Those places that sell non-DOT lights have them marked ‘for off road use only’.

I’ve seem many many many a shop/retailer sell these lights and other products that are for ’ off road use only’ , and never a word or phrase is mentioned to that fact… in todays legal system that leaves the door open for anyone who has bought a product that is required to be CSA/DOT approved… and not been told the product is ’ for off road use only’.

this is however I digression from the original point of the topic. The above is simply to point out that the likely hood of this being simply to get every DOT legal, is slim at best… as with most items the govement really dosen’t want in the provice .country they would make it illigal to import non CSA/DOT product into the country/ province… which they don’t.

As I’ve said befor ethis is all speculation until someone actually GETS an answer

rumor has it, the issue in ontario is about the MTO switching to a new computer system. The system is rumored to not allow 11 digit vins.

Apparently the system takes the 17 digit vin and can check the year of the car, paint, etc by the vin number…Seeing as the Japanese imports didnt adopt the 17vin standard until recently this makes sence.

This is just rumor i have seen from people looking into the matter.

IF this is the case, i’m sure a software patch will be made to fix it all rather soon.

On the other hand the DOT issues in the other provinces are quite real and worrying many people.

I just received mail today for my MPI renewal papers. and there was an attachment and pamphlet:

"When reviewing your 2006 Autopac renewal, you’ll notice there are no insurance premiums listed for your vehicle, plate # XXX 999. This is because the VIN we’ve recorded for your vehicle is invalid and needs to be corrected…

(2 lengthy paragraphs later)

…We discovered this error in your vehicle’s VIN by comparing current vehicle descriptions to information we received from the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). This information identifies accurately, by matching their serial numbers with their correct descriptions. We use information from IBC to rank the claim risk of most automobiles."

For those that don’t know, Manitoba has a province run insurance company.
And they pay some of the lowest premiums in the country.

I received a letter today from MTO on this… false alarm?
