Been trying to figure out the knock I’m getting since I first fired up my new 383. I could hear some rapping so I pulled the valve covers and started the engine. I don’t see any oil coming out of the pushrods. I only ran it at approximately idle speed. Should I see visible oil at this engine speed?
I’m almost certain oil came out of them when I primed the pump.
does seem high for idle, but not to bad on a cold motor just started up
how long did u run it for? and was the motor cold when u fired it up…cuz it takes a few minutes or so for the oil to start coming up …atleast tahts what i heard.
I’ve had them take as much as a minute…priming the pump and getting to the lifter valley can be tough. I think it takes the primer that has the bushing.
Motor was pretty much cold when started with valve covers off. Only ran it for a minute, because everything looked dry. Didn’t want to take a chance.
As far as valley restrictors, all the end plugs were in place, and as far as I could tell the little ball was in the block. Using a primer with the bushing got all flowing to the top end.
Maybe I just didn’t run it long enough for it to make it there.
You mean the pushrods should rotate while running?
60 PSI is good for a cold motor.
Did u prime it b4 hand?
I see u didn’t let it run long enough jeff, maybe let it run longer then see,at idle u may NOT see alot of oil beong pushed through n up.
Anything blocking the passages? I-E red shop towel? LOL,it has happened b4
Don’t tip toe too much. all the firing, and shutting off, and firing, and shutting off will jack you break in. If it came out when priming, then you have all your galley plugs in. A minute is a very long time. Are you sure you had it running a full minute without out any trace of oil? If you have oil pressure then all your galley plugs are in. Rev that mother fucker up. Easy process for brand new engine. 1. Fire it up 2. check oil guage 3. set timing 4. Get the RPM’s up!
Ignore alot of shit. its gonna make some noise, its gonna smoke.
you guys are nuts, if its knocking that means metal to metal… if you put one scratch in a bearing, thats the end of the bearings life… i have NEVER had such a problem with a properly primed engine, it is totally critical to get the oil everywhere before you run it, If you have oil pressure and nothing coming out of the pushrods, that is a problem, that means something is stoping the oil from getting up there… IE: bearing clearences, galley plug problems, cam bearing in wrong… stuff like that…
Sounds more like a knock, but that’s why I took the valve cover off, to see if it was a rocker.
Yes I soaked the lifters.
I’m almost to the point where I don’t even want to work on this car anymore. I’ve neglected things to work on it for way too long and it’s just one aggravation after another.
Knock, tap, slap, tic ect ect… He took the valve cover off cause what ever it was probably sounded like top end. IE valve train. Oil has to get all the way down the lifter galley and lifters primed before its going to send anything up the pushrods. Soaking them in oil doesn’t do the trick. Rarely ever. I have a special tool for trying to pump air out of lifter when in the oil bath, but you will never get it all out. They need ran in.
If there is a searious issue, that needs addressed. But if you trust your work at all then quit fartin around and break it in!
