Anybody know how much these run? I was driving through the middle of no where and I got picked up for window tint of all things.
My neighbor got picked up there twice doing 29 in a 25mph…the town is literally about a 1/4 mile long on this road and they have 3 police cars on it at all times…I don’t know any way to get around the area or I would.
The thing that really bothers me is that the tint is not even dark. I get that the police need to be able to see the driver and all, that’s why I went with 30% tint…you can see into the car just fine.
The tint laws are pretty clear cut. You get anything darker than 30% you asking for trouble. I have had illegal tint on my car since I bought it. I’ve got 4 tint tickets and surprisingly they were all dropped for 1 reason or another.
I got a ticket in the Town of Tonawanda was just in traffic court Tuesday and the girl behind me got a ticket for her tint. She got a $25 fine. But I think you still have to pay the mandatory state surcharge which for me was an additional $85.
You cant have any more then 30% blockage which is what come from the factory typically.
You put “30%” which is 70% blockage on top of whatever came from the factory (probably close to low-mid 20’s on a police reader).
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
A cop showed me this once when I was a kid. I had real dark tints on my old thunderbird. I got the ticket, and the cop told me to scrape it in 24 hours, and return to the police station (town of tonawanda) for inspection. There would be no ticket or fine.
With the window tint, the gun read something like .35. With no tint at all, it read like .71.
Then the cop said to me in a cocky voice “See your factory windows are almost illegal”…
So basically in the view of the law, its illegal to put any window film on the front side windows, or the rear side windows if there are seats for occupants.
So most sedans would only be allowed to tint the rear window, and the porthole window. That can be tinted as dark as you wish, the rest need to be untinted.
Its another bullshit law. Some states like CA are even more strict.
Some places like Nevada, and Arizona are the least stringent.
I cant remember the exact numbers, but this is correct as far as I know. cars come with 70% from the factory which is the legal limit in NY.
I have 50% tint all around to add to the 70% that is already there., you multiply the numbers .50 x .70 = .35, which is pretty close to what I am actually running.
In the OPs case, if he is running 30%, .70 x .30 = .21 or tint that allows 21% of the light to enter the vehicle.
Honestly the only time I was hassled was when I had the wing on the STI. Since taking it off, no one bothers me for my tint.
The laws are slightly different for vehicles like vans and SUVs. In a car similar to mine, you cant have tint on any of the side windows, but you are allowed any % on the rear glass. In an SUV or Van, you cant tint the drivers door or pass front door. Take my old blazer for example, Dark all around, except for the driver and pass doors. Came like this from the factory and is legal.
Edit: I think the fines are different for each area. I paid $25-35 for my tint ticket in Rochester. I just paid it and left it as is.
My lil bro got a ticket for his tints the other day. The cop made him take it off all 4 windows which I thought was overkill. Ontop of the fines, he had to pay the shop to remove it and now its looks dumb with only the back windshield and front sunstrip tinted.
Just make the kid pay the fine and call it a day.
haha, sounds like franklinville on the 16 to me. that’s my best guess. There’s always a cop somewhere on that little section of road. I got pulled over there for speeding up to a 45, 43 in a 30, 20 feet in front of the 45 sign. Whatever, I ended up paying 50 bucks as a parking ticket, no record of it on my license.
Usually small towns like this just want the money, so they pull you over, reduce it so the state and insurance don’t know, and keep the cash.
