that is a good idea, just don’t know much about the hardware aspects of this project. Don’t get all jumpy when I ask simple questions.

the same way the ABS system measures the comparative wheel rotations.
that’s the easiest part.
As far as interfacing w/ an off the shelf GPS unit… good luck… however, tire wear doesn’t need REAL time calculation, unless you are doing a ton of burnouts…
that would work also. I think I would want to look for something a little more accurate though. so the wear could be monitored on the inside and outside of the tires.
So 3 rows, left, center, right. 5 depths… would be ok for say a street car. I was thinking more interms of a race car. Where it would have to be incredibly accurate where you can tell the wear difference between the three after the first lap. So adjustments in driving styles… could be made to accomodate the excessive wear on one of the tires
seriously though dan, I can probably write software for all of this fairly easily. Let me know if you want some help with it.
As long as there is an API for me to get data from, I can crank out most of it in my sleep.
I have OFTEN thought about creating software that could tune a car itself. Using advanced logic you could easily tell a computer how to tune any car. The problem I ran into, is how the hell can I teach a computer how to tune a car if I don’t even know how to tune a car myself.
for a race car you could still use my rpm method, just calculate it on the straights, algorithms get a little tougher, but only slightly. Hard to accommodate for tire spin.
you may be able to electrically isolate a tread block and check it’s resistance somehow, to get an exact wear percent… not positive.
Its not like it needs to know the absolute wear from the start at the like 10 hz, just accurate after a lap. so even once every 10 seconds would be more than sufficient… then average the readings
Rename the thread to tire tread depth device discussion for god’s sake!!!
I second the motion on the park. How about we raise some money to redo a park or playground that really needs the help?? Maybe a shitty one in the city or something where the kids can use it.
A GPS based low treadwear warning would be neat. All you would need is a GPS and an input from the car’s speedometer. The rest would just be logic.
When you get new tires, you measure and tell the GPS:
-Tire circumference
-Initial tread depth
-Low depth warning point
The GPS then checks the difference between speedo reading and its own speed reading. It should probably take an average over the first 100 miles for the sake of accuracy. It won’t be a fixed value, but rather a % based on road speed.
From there it calculates the warning level of % based on a crazy complex calculation (Pi*D). When % = %warning, it starts flashing a warning message that it’s time to get new tires.
Anyhow, yeah warning based on change in difference between speedo reading and gps indicated speed.
why would tire spin even matter? you are only worried about how fast the tread is deteriorating in a given distance. Tire spin is just going to kill even more rubber. IE, you have lost X amount of rubber in the past Y miles. That way a pit crew can say holy crap, hes burning through tires and going to have to pit too soon.
lol fuck, you guys already covered that while I was typing. :fail:
yea this is moving fast fry, i am having trouble keeping up
LOL or “STOP DRIVING LIKE AN ASSHOLE!!”
Edit: I would also be in to fix up a park for kids. or at least get them more involved in anything other than getting in trouble. I chose porn production and acting. 12 YO or under plz
exactamungo
thank god…
i really think its a good idea… what ever we do just to make somthing a lil better and we can get some SPONSOR names out there… for a lil money we could do something big
oh and furthermore, once you have a ratio for tire rotations per X-distance you can store the past values and compare them to previous values(lap vs. lap) to see how steep of a decrease you had on each lap. That would tell you “oh wow, this lap I was a little too aggressive”. We could even make a little graph and show the slope.
omg I just used the word slope!! yayyyy I remembered something i learned in a school!!!
are you looking for a profit out of this… or just to help?
sponsors would be cool. I have wednesdays open from 5pm - 8pm to dedicate to something like this I AM NOT IN THIS FOR PROFIT. I AM OUT IF IT IS PROFIT DRIVEN
correct tom… thats the whole point of logging. wear and reference over tire heat and pressures could tell you quite a bit and give a pretty good edge over the competition. I’d really like to see what kind of logging F1 has… I bet its mind blowing
How about you all just come weed my landscaping?
like one way to get crazy money if have a drawing for a $50 gas card or $150 meat gift card… ( we did the meat gift card at work and it went over real good)… sometimes you can get the gift cards half off or even free to get the money on what we decide to get
edit im not in it for money… i dont need it… i would like to help out… but the sponsors could give say $100 to get there name on a somthing while we are working on or building
