that’s the point… how can you impose a standard that doesn’t take into account that a versa and a full-size towing pickup are bred for two largely different reasons. he’s asking how can someone make a single MPG demand and apply it across the board? the auto companies are failing and should. it’s not the governments responsibility to keep companies in business, i never thought that and never will. they ‘helped’ the auto makers by not voting for these rules… it wasn’t their job to keep them in business, like the garbage bailout.

The proposal to reform the 30-year-old Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program would require that the nation’s fleet of passenger cars and light trucks – SUVs, minivans and pickups – improve fuel efficiency by 4 percent annually. Changes would begin in 2011 and the fleet would have to average 35 miles per gallon by 2020.

Four percent gains would be expected annually after that but no longer-term target was set. The Transportation Department would set mileage formulas for vehicle classes, based on weight and size. The agency could reduce targets if it concludes manufacturers would be hurt financially, a clause that outraged consumer and environmental groups but gave industry little comfort.

Light trucks must currently get 24 mpg by 2011 while cars must average 27.5 mpg. The truck standard was changed last year. The passenger car standard has been the same since 1990.

WASHINGTON – With two of Detroit’s Big Three automakers no longer able to resist, the Obama White House will announce sped-up fuel economy standards that will require all auto-makers, including Detroit’s foreign competitors, to increase fleet fuel efficiency by 5 percent per year starting in 2012.

For 2016 – the final year new the rules will apply – the fleet fuel efficiency standard for all domestically sold passenger cars will be 39 mpg. It will be 30 mpg for all domestically sold light trucks and sport utility vehicles. The average of these two equals a passenger car and light truck fuel efficiency standard of 35.5 mpg. The current requirements are 27.5 mpg for cars and 23.1 mpg or trucks. The tighter standards will first affect the 2011 model year for cars and trucks.

FLEET they say, not all vehicles must be 35mpgs or whatever arbitrary number they use. So, they say 4 or 5% increases per vehicle type.
