Come on guys we have a thread meant for bitching and whining about President Obama, use it.
What is the problem here? If the government is willing to shell out some cash to teach us what to do in case of an emergency during the age of terrorism why is that a bad thing?
As long as they don’t tell me to go off and fight a war then this is a good idea.
This is not a military draft.
How about a mandatory 2 yr conscription into Americorps for public works projects. Imagine what could be done with such a huge work force.
i was talking to my professors about this idea of mandatory americorps and somehow making it a part of being able to get grants/no interest loans/or scholarships for college. Or even doing it as a part of high school something. It would be have great positive effects for youth and only better prepare them for the future. I myself am signing up for Peace Corps when I finish my grad work at UB and would love to see something like this made mandatory
I’ll be fine. I’m ridiculous at counter-strike.
What a waste of an education. What did you go to grad school for? Communications?
I am sorry you do not agree that the experience one receives from a program like Peace corps or Americorps is not beneficial. I am not concerned with making millions and bragging about the slobs I bang to my friends on the interwebz.
Actually the peace corp. is a good way to meet people and get contacts and looks great for trying to get a government job.
I fully support people doing community service. I was a firefighter for 7 years and it really opened my eyes. HOWEVER!!! The government has NO RIGHT whatsoever to force people to do anything. The government is here to make sure we are not invaded, provide infrastructure, etc. I firmly believe the government has far too much power and far too much say in how people run their lives. People should not be dependant on their government…governments should depend on the people. Just remember one thing about all Obama’s pomices. “A government large enough to give you everything, is large enough to take it from you.”
+1
When my brother graduated from college at MSU there was probably a few thousand in his grad class. The top student with her law degree instead of going on to practice was going into the peace corp for 5 years, I thought to myself what a complete waste of college and money.
Nothing wrong with doing community service and whatnot. It really changes you and opens your eyes. You shouldnt be forced to do it when you have done nothing wrong by the government that is there for you, not there to force you to do things. Laws are one thing. Forced labor is another.
and wut is with forcing people to pay taxes… and all the lame speed limits… man this country sometimes.
cuz they are hacking.
L2 strafe!
I do not support involuntary service, it lowers the quality of recruits and lowers moral!
This is coming from a Marine with over 4yrs in and a combat deployment. What makes our military better then most is that it’s volunteer.
EDIT: Oh, and the whole mandatory Americore and peacecorps is lame as hell. If you want to spend your time in one of those programs cool, but don’t force it on us all thanks. (That would be like the Boy Scouts being mandatory… oh wait, those assholes won’t even except atheists or homosexuals)
I am a 10 year veteran. Just cause I wana do something, or you wana do something, doesn’t mean that we should make it manditory. I have fought for freedom. Forcing anyone to do anything isn’t freedom. Fuck obama. Glad everyone here voted for the black jesus.
:word: Thank you.
I think everyone should have the opportunity to perform some form of civil service in exchange for tuition money. Not everyone meets the physical standards but still desire the financial and educational mobility that is relatively easily accessible from military service. Not to mention to use it as a resume builder.
but there is a difference between mandatory service and the opportunity t perform service. It makes all the world of difference.
The reason the military has the ability to PAY into a system, and in return get some moeny back, is that normally, our job is not a job, its a total life. We have no time usually to go to school (shit bags do, another story all in its own). People were getting out, with no skills for the private sector, and no education. Recruiting dropped cause who wants to serve, only to be left high and dry once its over. So they decided that hey, if you serve, we will make sure you have access to education after you get out, so you can continue on with life.
This was an incentive to come in. I know that many here think that the military is just another job, but thats far from the truth. You cannot tell me that a guy that serves 4 years, with 3 of those overseas, or in intense training misisons that cannot go to his house, much less school, deserves the same program that some kid that does some acter school activiites.
In short, if you do what this country is, and give everyone this, you remove incentive for those to actually put in effort to get it. Once again, kids will decide to just smoke weed and go work for obama’s army registering voters, rather than fight wars.
