OFFICIAL 2013-'14 BUFFALO SABRES THREAD

They could start winning and lose out on a good draft spot. That would be worse at this point.

Nolan & LaFontaine are way better than Regier & Rolston. So, it’s a step forward. I love it.

Then we’d only have 9840534895738953 other draft picks. Plus isn’t everyone saying this years draft won’t be as good as next years.

Lmao my exact thoughts

Lol on what basis?

Hey, at least Nolan doesn’t wear gardening gloves at practice.

So lets throw out 20 years of front office NHL experience and a track record of winning every trade he’s ever made for a guy with 40 NHL games under his belt, which led to his resignation and his own admittance that he wouldn’t make a good GM.

Nolan is interim for a reason. Whatever GM they bring in, is going to either have their own guys or will make the decision.

Stanley Cups won by Darcy = 0
You could have 1,000 years of experience, it’s all still meaningless unless you get results.

16yrs on the Job with ZERO to show for it…the dismissal of a core that you assembled that could not get the job done and a coach that you hired that could not get the job done.

However, this is 100% a marketing move…things are dismal…people are complaining, tickets are going left unused, bring back people the fans like. This stinks of Marv Levy and the Bills…however I will give Patty La a chance to hire the right GM. This model of a former hockey icon coming back to a team for a Prez of Ops seems to have merit in Boston, Colorado and other places.

If he hires the right GM, he has done his job…the right GM will hire the right coach and select the right players to make a winning franchise.

The only way to know if its right is to give it time, they gave Darcy his time and well beyond and he proved he could not get it done.

People seem to forget that without Jay McKee’s freak leg infection and a host of other injuries they probably would have won the cup 2006 with a team Darcy built.

Or how about in 07 when the Sabres won the president’s trophy?

Yeah it was probably time for him to go for ticket sales reasons and fan base appeasement but it’s sad to see this “he did nothing” mentality as the guy is shown the door.

People with cups have had a fraction of the time he has to make things work and have been fired. Its a win now business.

He assembled a team that could have would have should have…thats not good enough.

It’s not a horseshoes tournament, close doesn’t count. How many other teams could have made ‘what if’ excuses too? Win or nothing, that’s the only goal of professional sports.

People don’t realize what a “bad” GM is. (IE - Mike Milbury).

Our level of talent is too low to be competitive.

Regier was also handcuffed by Golisano and working for a team that was owned by the NHL.

Instead, let’s ignore the facts. Let’s ignore that the Stanley Cup is the hardest championship in sports to win. Let’s ignore that before Chicago won 2 cups in 4 years (which is nearly impossible nowadays) - they had gone 50 years without a cup.

I’d be more disappointed in a team that is BUILT to win the cup (Chicago, Boston, Pittsburgh, etc) and don’t, than a team that isn’t built to win…losing.

Sabres fans are all generally sheep. Mentally ill, sheep. Mentally ill sheep who are currently planning on whether or not the parade route should go down Franklin or Delaware.

The Sabres and Panthers don’t make the playoffs for 10 years, everyone freaks. The Canucks and Sharks haven’t been able to close a series in 5 years. That’s more of an issue.

A good rule of thumb is the more minutes played by John Scott a game, the less chance you have of making the playoffs. If the Sabres REALLY want to impress me, they will waive Scott.

And guess what, they made changes to do something different. They didn’t list excuses like “It’s hard to win a cup”, “Our owner is mean”, “Our players got hurt”, “People need to endure some suffering”, “What has Darcy done wrong in his 16 years”…

When you followup your failure with excuses and what-ifs you have a problem.

Who cares things haven’t been “working” since 2006 time to start over

Nobody is making excuses. My point is, it’s harder to explain why a team built to win, isn’t. Not why the Sabres can’t make the playoffs when they don’t have a 20 goal scorer.

They should bring back Dan Dipofi

This plan worked for the Bills with bringing back Marv.

Oh wait

Really? I count 4 excuses in your post…

So we’re supposed to lower our expectations to make Darcy look better, got it!

Isn’t it the job of the GM to bring in talented players? Guess not.

Looks like excuse #3

Excuse #4

I’m done.

I’m not a Sabres fan. I’m not making excuses. I honestly don’t give a shit they are in the bottom of the league.

You’re missing the point that I was making, that Darcy didn’t have a very good opportunity a majority of his years. Ultimately, Pegula has the power to veto any and all decisions that Regier made the past 3 years. He obviously okay’ed the Leino contract and the Myers extension. He okay’ed the firing of Ruff and the hiring of Rolston. He allowed Regier to stay as long as he did. My point, and you’re missing it…is that Regier isn’t THAT BAD of a GM, based on the issues he had to deal with. He never lost a trade. He signed the Calder Trophy winning rookie to a big contact…he hasn’t panned out. That’s coaching and the player. It’s not the GM’s job to get the players to want to give 110%. It’s about finding the right coach to do it.

The “excuses” that I gave weren’t in defense of Regier. It was against the fans of Buffalo wondering why we haven’t won a cup yet. We can’t build a bridge and have been talking about rebuilding the waterfront for three decades… I can’t believe they think they expect immediate results from a sports franchise. How fucking bad have the Bills been and for how long?

Just like the Bills can’t progress without a #1 elite QB. The Sabres need a #1 elite center and a better PP option than McBain.

Yeah, it’s the GM’s job to bring in talented players. The Sabres have been in on every major free agent in the past 3 years. They overpaid for a couple of them. You can’t acquire “good” players anymore, you have to build them through the draft. Out of Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh and Detroit…when was the last time they made a blockbuster trade that mattered???

The Sabres almost landed Elias a few years ago and were offering him bigger money than the Devils. They were in on Richards. It wasn’t for a lack of effort.

Regier was the least of their problems. Goaltending is their only non-issue. A no move is the only worse move than firing Darcy. He had to go, but this isn’t going to change anything when your best defensemen is Christian Erhoff.
