Official Android thread

I keep reading/hearing about this Google Now, but I can’t find it in the Play Store on my phone. What gives??? Just got my Galaxy S running JellyBean

Just hit the Google search and you are in Google Now

You have the quick search bar on the top of your homescreen? Just click the search bar. Google Now is largely more of a re-branded search app with predictive technology.

AHHHH, gotcha. so will it automatically start setting up for these “cards” everyone is speaking of or do I have to do some sort of setup?

it depends, i editted some settings to tell it where I live and work and what sports teams that I like. That really helps things out. Other than that, your location settings will likely dictate other behavior. If you keep gps and wifi off and don’t allow the device to see any location data, it will never make good location based suggestions.

It’s cool, just use it and try to be open about your settings/search data and it will really amaze you.

Thanks!

Because the Galaxy S3 doesn’t use on-screen keys, you can’t swipe up at any time to reach Google Now like you can on the Galaxy Nexus. Instead, there’s a new button at the bottom of the task switcher when you long-press the home key, and this is what you tap to load up Google Now. The existing shortcut buttons in the task switcher – task manager and close all apps – remain, though with icons instead of text.

Android 4.2! NOT…

Everytime I try to update my phone my phone basically tells me to Fuck off lol, and it doesn’t connect to my computer. Im still on 2.3.4 …

It says “connection failed due to authentication error”

Anyone using modded kernels?

I love me some nexus rumors

Lol one of the comments states no more Nexus phones on Verizon. If that’s true I’ll be disappointed but not shocked. Verizon severely fucked themselves in the ass with the Galaxy Nexus.

Im using lean kernel.

I did a lot of tweaking on my Nexus and managed to get full 12 hours of use with a couple hours of screen time and a 10 mile run being tracked via run keeper. I know this may not sound too jaw dropping but my phone rarely makes it a full day especially with a 10 mile run involved. Love my new settings.

-reduced the dim settings.
-underclocked to 700mhz
-undervolted to 1300Mhz
-changed my color balance to be a little darker then stock too.

What did they do to piss Google off?

Take SEVERAL months to push an update to a phone the update was made for.

edit: a Nexus phone is the most “vanilla” experience you can get on Android. So when Google releases an Android update all “Vanilla” phones “should” be able to get the update immediately assuming the phone has required hardware. Verizon got in between the update process for the Nexus’ and delayed it several months.

^basically. Instead of getting the newest from google Verizon phones are delayed for this that and the other thing, and usually leads to people rooting then romming. Verizon just fucking sucks with updates.

sprint isnt much better :-/

newest version available for my Galaxy S is FC09 Gingerbread. Thank god for root/rom…I’m running CyanogenMod10 (4.1 JellyBean copy) right now…it’s got a couple little bugs but it’s still in beta/nightlies right now.

I have sprint for my work phone…I just root and rom that shit anyway.
