Official Android thread

seriously if the rumors are true that this nexus is only coming with 8GB on it (maybe 16GB option) then either there will be multiple phones (one higher and this being the lower end) or my galaxy nexus will be used for a long time. 16 gb is not enough on a phone for me let along 8GB. I can deal with that little amount on a tablet because i dont use that as much but the phone I use that every day

What do you have against external storage?

such as an SD Card? it slows down the entire phone because all I/O is slower

I think ideally a 64GB internal storage phone would be perfect. Android has yet to make a phone/program/way to easily put and play music on their phones like iTunes and iPhones. I’m aware of all the free players, but it still isn’t as nice.

Yeah but who cares if it’s built in flash memory or a flash memory card you stuck in yourself? Is there a difference?

From the article.

In one flash memory test, performance dropped more than 20X.

“A good chunk of time for users is spent waiting for websites to load … [and for] applications to load,” said Hyojun Kim, a Ph.D. student in the College of Computing at Georgia Tech.

And, while waiting for apps to load is annoying, a more nefarious impact of poor flash performance is that it depletes a smartphone’s battery.

But Steve Jobs is still an asshole for saying no to having an SD card slot.

Meh, I wouldn’t mind it being an option, but I love that my Galaxy Nexus doesn’t need to be mounted and shit when I plug it into the computer.

Right, but does it matter if it’s internal or external flash memory? Aren’t the phone’s built in storage and an external SD card both the type of flash memory that the article is talking about?

What’s this mounting nonsense you’re talking about? You don’t lose phone access to the storage on your nexus when you plug in to access phone storage files from your PC?

Nope, as soon as I drop a file on the phone I can access it right away without unplugging from the computer. The Internal and external storage are similar but not the same. Plus 9 times out of 10 internal is faster than external.

Well that’s cool.

Considering he only did so to sell people overpriced internal storage…

Well, this doesn’t mention the fact that you can no longer REALLY mount the storage as USB storage on your PC. It doesn’t work like that. Yes, there is a /sdcard directory on the device, but it’s not something that you can straight-up mount like a traditional USB device.

You have to use either MTP or PTP to get files on or off the device, which can be cumbersome (unless you find the right desktop apps).

So, since security comes up pretty often about Android phones, I thought that I would cross-post a reddit thread that I came across last night.

I am not necessarily endorsing all of the ideas/statements, but there is some good information here, but technical about how Android itself works as well as what can be done to protect yourself. There is even some iPhone v Android discussion which is interesting.

Your opinion. My opinion he did it because he demanded a consistent level of performance and knew including that SD card slot wouldn’t allow that. Apple does a lot to protect the average user from themselves and make the product work just right out of the box. It’s why their stuff works so well without all the nonsense tweaking you have to do with Android devices.

I don’t miss my scdard slot a single bit. Then again, I don’t insist on traveling around with my entire music library, HD movies and nightly backups of my phone stored there.

Some folks just have too much data and refuse to delete.

I want a S3 so I can tap to share playlists.

Actually, not really.

lol I’ve never turned on my NFC. Probably never will.

Using NFC and tectiles to disable all notification sounds and lights, turn off BT and make sure the ringer is on (and a different tile to reverse all that in the morning) is really handy. Much better than trying to schedule those tasks since I never seem to go to bed at the same time each night.

I doubt I’ll ever tap to send a playlist or image.

JayS I’m going to start setting NFC tags outside your house

I’m over the whole NFC security thing.

1: It won’t read NFC from the lockscreen.
2: You have to literally touch the NFC tag for at least a full second to get it to read.

These two items make it a really inconvenient way to hack someone’s phone. Especially when there are so many easier blatant security holes in Android.
