$63 and a slap in the mouth cause I like ya.
and…
Had my GS3 out of its case last night. Tried to slide it into my pocket, missed, slowed it’s fall to the sidewalk with my foot, still cracked the screen top to bottom, plus 3 bonus cracks and some gnarly scuffs. Keep your pocket computers covered in thin sheets of glass in cases kids.
It’s insured so it’s only going to cost me $99 to replace, but still that’s $99 bucks I’d rather spend on coke and hookers.
the screen on my nexus has been cracked for about the past 6 months. then the other day i dropped it twice and it got MUCH worse lol. I still don’t think I’m gonna bother getting it fixed lol.
I need a holster for my GSIII, Looking around it seems that maybe the Otterbox Defender is the best bet. It’s my work phone so I’ll probably only use it during the day.
Yeah it’s going to drive me nuts but it’s actually barely noticable when the screen’s on so I’ll probably wait till it gets worse before I file a claim. Shouldn’t take long. It feels like the glass is separating from the housing at the bottom and my nail catches on the big crack.
at least you got insurance. I still cant believe when people get $700+ devices they depend on and dont spend a couple bucks to make replacement easy based on the “well I never had a problem with my last phone” line of thinking…
The phone is, what, $600 dollars out of pocket? Insurance is less than $6/mo + $99 deductible? So that’s 24 x 6 + 99 = $243 for insurance over 2 years. If you figure there’s 50% probability that you’ll have to replace your $600 dollar phone then that’s $300 vs $243 so insurance wins by $57 dollars.
In my case, add in a toddler in the house, golden retriever puppy, and a phone that’s really thin and wide and covered in glass and I figured I’d need to replace it multiple times over 2 years. Or just not own a smartphone. Looks like I’m right.

Bad week for me and phones. Monday night my 2 months old SD card crapped out on me. Didn’t lose anything too important, but didn’t have any pictures after like May of this year backed up. Documents were on dropbox and everything else was like music and audiobooks and crap.
Anybody know if you get a new back cover and battery from assurion? Or is it just the phone body like a VZW warranty claim?
Assurion should replace the entire thing. Should. The things I have seen…
I do that…although I can actually take care of my phones. All of my phones I’ve had still work(ed). I always throw a ZAGG screen protector on and on my Nexus I have the otterbox commuter case. I’ve never replaced a phone because I dropped or broke it myself. I’ve had a couple replacements that were manufacturer defects.
+1 to fry. I usually assume that ~halfway through my 2 year upgrade cycle my phone will be wrecked and in need of replacement. My upgrade is in august. I figure another month or two of falls and the screen will be unusable. Then I’ll get a replacement for the final 6 months or so and see what the next big thing is gonna be.
I use this math to justify not buying the insurance. It’s worked out fine for me through an iphone 3g and iphone 4. Hoping the luck continues on the S3. My logic is I’m a big DIY nerd and if I break it chances are I can fix it for way less than I’d be paying in insurance+deductible over the 2 years. Plus now that I’m in the android world what will be S3 honestly be worth in the used market a year from now? Chances are I could just buy a used S3 on ebay for less than your $243 by then because I’ve never seen a single droid phone hold value like Apple’s phones do.
It’s risky though. I’m a big DIY guy, and I had a real tough time replacing the screen on an HTC phone. Also, the Galazy Nexus has a slightly curved screen which is rather expensive to purchase (over 100 dollars I think). So not every phone is the same in terms of DIY fixes. The risk is getting past that first 6-12 months when the phones are still super expensive. My wife almost lost her Droid 4 2 months after getting it, so finding a used one for a couple hundred would have been impossible. After the 1 year mark, used ones are easier to find for a reasonable cost.
It may not be a huge cost savings to have insurance, but it’s really handy to not have to worry about it.
As long as you understand the costs involved and such, godspeed. The average customer, however, does not. Standard lines we would hear:
This is just what is coming to mind. I couldnt tell you how many times people also threatened to sue me/my employees/the store/the owner/verizon because they broke their phone and didnt want to pay to replace it.
In the end, if you are spending $200+ on a phone with a contract, it is $600 and up on the retail side. if you use insurance 1 time, its paid for itself.
I questioned for years why I was paying so much for health insurance, as I never get sick, etc. Then I had a heart attack at 24. All those years of paying into it finally paid off…
My point is just because you’ve never broken a phone does not mean you wont at some point. If you want a fairly stress free replacement experience, i suggest paying for the insurance. If you dont mind using an old phone, buying a used one somewhere or fixing it yourself, by all means.
Valid points, wasn’t aware of the heart attack…sheesh. The ambulance ride alone can cost $1,000 w/o insurance.
I bought one phone out of contract, only because I wanted a new phone…$400 later I had a new KRAZR. I still have my OG droid as a backup if needed.
Well, by not buying insurance @ $7 a month for the past 5 years I’ve saved $420. If I have to pay retail for an S3 tomorrow it’s really only costing me $180.
Comparing it to health insurance is quite a stretch, considering the minor out patient surgery I had this year would have been $15k plus out of pocket.
A catastrophic injury to my phone with no insurance, $600, problem solved. I’ll grumble but it doesn’t break my budget.
A catastrophic injury to myself with no insurance, hello bankruptcy, goodbye nice things.
EDIT: PS… I have Applecare on my wife’s iPhone. So part of my reasoning is that I’m particularly careful with my phones.
Reasonable. No way I would want to attempt to replace the glass and bezel on this thing (the 2 pieces most likely IMO to get broken.) Plus I was apparently right about being clumsy enough to need to replace this thing quickly, aka while it’s still worth a good buck even used. There’s a lightly dinged up one on ebay now for $379, the rest are $450+.
Yeah, Androids depreciate faster. Someone introduces a new flagship every couple of months, versus apple introducing a new phone every 2 years. Interesting how Apple’s slow product cycle can work in a consumer’s favor to keep their resale value up.
Apple updates yearly, but yea, the market isn’t nearly as saturated as the market for androids. I’m definitely not careful enough to roll without insurance.
They refresh the processor and camera yearly, they bring out a new phone worth upgrading to every 2 years. Hence the slow depreciation.
Have you seen the iSheep line up for EVERY single incremental upgrade? They break their previous record every damn time. The 3GS and 4S were just as popular as their predecessors.
After getting 1 phone replaced by them I ended my insurance plan. I paid for the insurance for almost 2 years at the 6$, paid another 50 or 75 to have the phone replaced… ended up getting a refurbished phone that was in worse condition that the one I had replaced.
