Official Android thread

when i take the body glove off my phone, im like holy shit this thing is thin… cause it literally makes it a brick. its thicker than a bb storm with the glove on. also they added a plastic frame thingy on it and its kinda sharp. not sharp enough to cut you but sharp enough to wonder why they put it there…

hmmm yea, thinking I’ll probably go with a silicone case of some sort. I am not a fan of ice cream sammiches in my pocket like skunkape

on a conf call yesterday we were told we wouldnt see the incredible till mid-late july. FYI.

Just joined the club yesterday … I like it better than iPhone.

I’ll be honest, I’ve never spent more than 2 minutes on an Android phone. What do you like better? I’ve been debating the switch.

Works better with Mail (exchange)
Easier to customize and get free apps
better browser
Runs on multiple phones
is not an iphone or made by apple
Better Cameras (Droid, Incredible, Nexus One, Evo)
Better overall functionality
Will be running flash soon
True multi-tasking

I have both the Droid and iPhone, I’d much rather use my droid.

Anybody have any issues switching to 2.2 on their droid? I have been debating it for the past couple of weeks because I’m afraid of bricking my phone/and or terminating my warranty by rooting the phone.

I’m still waiting for the official release. Tuner posted a download that I guess works fine, but I’m holding off on this one. I did an early update to mine and my fiancee’s droid and it worked fine. Again that was provided via Tunerfreak. Upgrading early really isn’t Rooting your phone, but it is an un-official software mod. If you can wait it should be out within a month I’m guessing.

<Edit>

yes i did it, not really too hard but since its not an official release it is not optimized for the droid so it take a long time to start up to where the phone is usable and not deathly slow. after that though it runs fine with just a few problems and an occasional hang up for a few seconds. so if you are not worried about speed so much and would rather be able to watch flash video’s and have 5 home screens then make the switch, if not then stay with 2.1 because there are still some apps that wont work on droid 2.2

Motorola announced that 2.2 will be coming to the droid and droid x by end of summer

My comparison is with the iphone 4 here as that’s what I would be going to. I’m assuming it’s a fairly easy transition going over to a droid. Which of the droid devices is the best?

the number one this that stood out from your comparison was this

True multi-tasking New iphone does this as well.

because the iphone is not TRUE multitasking for example you cant run AIM in the background or a sports score app because apple does not provide a auto update API so it is not true multitasking

Works better with Mail (exchange) This I don’t know much about if you use multiple emails
Easier to customize and get free apps Even after Jailreaking an iPhone? you dont need to root/jailbreak to get free apps, can have widgets, download programs that change the theme of phone (not really to the extent as you can with jailbroken iphone)
better browser Def something I want to look into. Why is it better? one word flash but also the browser is faster
Runs on multiple phones OK? meaning you have more choices on types of phones and carriers and not just one
Better Cameras (Droid, Incredible, Nexus One, Evo) Better than the 4g iphone? evo and incredible have 8mp camera

Gotcha. Thanks for the info.

I really just need some time to actually play with one of these things before I make a decision.

I’m assuming you have AT&T? Maybe wait for the iPhone 4 to hit stores and test em out against the Evo (which I’ve not used)

Tuner basically summed it up. iPhone emulates multi-tasking but android has it beat. I’ve never jailbroken my iPhone since it’s for work, but my Droid is incredibly easy to customize. If you use torrents or P2P you can grab apps for free. Also, if you plan on using your work email, I think the Androids work a lot better with exchange.

Typing this from my new ego 4g.

So far I’m very very impressed. The overall quality of this phone is top notch. It really is a great phone.

Likes: powerful, awesome screen makes web browsing and texting a breeze, great camera(including the front one). I have been getting well over a full day of use on a single charge which is acceptable for me. Surprising, sprint’s network along with free roaming has given me better call and text quality than att.

Dislikes: no 4g yet, data coverage is awfully spotty. The lack of a physical keyboard is killing me.

This phone replaces a lot of other devices I once used (point n shoot camera, ipod, internet browsing etc) so to me it was well worth the 200 dollars.

Additionally the Sprint guy at the mckinley mall hooked us up with a great deal. 2 free blackberry tours for my parents, 23 percent off our monthly contract, no activation fees, 3 free car chargers and a free Bluetooth headset. Overall we shaved off about $80 from our att contract, got better service and now everyone in my family has data and text.

Awesome

Anyone have suggestions for a new Android phone. Really liked the HTC Incredible but Verizon has a 4 week wait on it. I am dropping my iPhone and moving to ATT so I am debating grabbing the Incredible or waiting a few more weeks for the next one to come out and getting a temporary Android phone until then

I’m not really a fan of the ‘skinned’ android flavors. That is my biggest incredible complaint. That and battery life.

Other than that, it’s a great phone.

The droid X looks like it’s going to be running a ‘motoblur’ front-end…I am sort of meh on that

I really just want an Android phone that is all touch screen and no slide out keyboard. The Droid X is gigantic IMO. I loved the incredible but am wondering if its good to wait to july and get that or should I hold off till the end of the summer and see what they come out with next.

it does look big, but a nice big screen would be nice…Might be awkward in the pocket though.

the new moto blur on the droid x looks very slick and i am debating on weather i will get it or not to replace my droid. the new motoblur has dynamic widgets which is very nice and depending on what size you make the widget the more options you have, this video shows you the widgets

whether.
