Official Android thread

well i think blackberry finally pissed me off enough to try a droid.

someone pick one for me.

i enjoy my phone so with that being said…i’ll suggest the thunderbolt since its basically the same thing, no?

i should prolly list my needs/wants:

needs to be VZW
1gz+ processor
5 mp cam
not super amped about going all touchscreen…
longer battery life
dont care about 4g

pro? incred 2?

i think its actually between those 2 now that i narrow it down myself. do i go for the newer device + front cam? or do i go for the blackberry-esq droid pro?

not interested in thunderbolt, charge, commando, droid2, droid x

pro.

Wouldn’t go pro. It seems more like a Droid bastard child. What are the chances they’ll push updates to it at all? Galaxy S 2 is coming soon as well as Droid x 2 and experia.

So you don’t want a android phone from verizon basically.

lol uhhhhhhhhh this is like someone who sells cars saying “what car should i buy?”

You could wait for this:

perhaps you missed the first one?

Lol you’ve excluded a lot of good phones, and I highly doubt the Pro will get gingerbread, at least not soon. Out of the two you want the Incredible is a better phone.

yea man, im horrible with my own phones. im just so set in my ways and have a few things that i need it to do daily, and do well, which blackberry has done. But driving to philly this weekend there were a couple times that the gps freaked out on me, requiring a reboot on some pretty desolate back roads. it’s been randomly acting like a teenager as well, not doing what i want it to do…

I dont really car about getting updates and hacking it and everything… i just dont have the time. i can have one of my employees root it for me if needed…

If i make the jump it will probably be in the next month. I hate playing the “waiting for a device” game, so i most likely wont wait for anything. besides, there is almost always a round of bugs/issues to figure out with a brand new release.

I manage a verizon store. my personal opinion of carriers aside, it needs to be a vzw phone. besides, my plan is like $10.

I know…IIRC you’re out by my fiancee’s in the Alden area. Anyway the phones you left out, it’s basically like going to a steak house and saying “I don’t want anything with meat”. You’re completely opposed to an onscreen keyboard? I’ll trade you my Original Droid for an upgrade ;).

im not completely opposed to it, just not super amped.

Ive been a blackberry addict for the last 3+ years. for my money there isnt a keyboard out there that comes close to a blackberry, not to mention other little things, like the mute/pause media button, skip forward/backward buttons (media), dedicated physical lock button, screen i can read perfectly in direct sunlight, among other things. Blackberry also, in my opinion, has better interconnectivity between apps. as in, the email client talks to facebook which can talk to the calendar which can talk to etc, etc, etc.

losing true push email and exchange contact lookup is going to be a serious concern for me as well.

and of course, my beloved BBM. sigh…

However… I’m starting to think I would really like a good browser. i’ll be the first to admit BB is god awful at making a useful browser. The GPS is much better as in a droid as well.

apps that need to work are pandora, slacker, a good media player, facebook, and twitter. everything else is just filler to me.

Exchange support is spotty among the android phones. Some like the EVO and Eris don’t cooperate well with exchange servers especially if you’re using Exchange 2010 (SP1). You’ll need a phone with at least 2.2.1 installed. If the phone (some don’t) doesn’t support GAL lookup, you can download corporate directory that will let you lookup names internally. Also with 2010 Exchange, if you have OWA configured you can remotely wipe devices if needed. I’d figure out what version of Exchange you’re company is running, then search the phones you are interested in and see if they are compatible. It’s better than requiring users to have a BES in order to get BBs on Exchange.

Pandora works great on the androids, it even has a widget you can add to your home screen for easy access/control. It is of course a bit of a battery drain. Slacker I’ve never used so…no comment. Media Players are hit or miss with Android. There are however 3rd party apps that can take over like WinAmp or Double Twist. Facebook is on par with the iPhone version so you’re getting almost the same interface and functionality. Twitter I really don’t use much on my phone but that is supposedly very good on the Android as well. I think there was just a new interface update to it as well. The stock Android browser works well…but it’s nothing overly special. More powerful Android phones have the option to run Firefox (as well as other browsers) very nicely. Older phones FF runs like shit on.

Almost all android devices have the screen off/lock button physically on the device. Some are in better places than others. The Atrix for example has the button behind and up top on the phone…kinda awkward to press. I keep my phones screen dim (to save battery), however it’s a PITA to read in the sun. So if you do this, make sure you have a widget to turn the brightness up.

How do I delete all this useless pre loaded crap on my commando?
Ex ) bing, slacker, NFL ect…

Root your phone and then I use Titanium backup to uninstall the apps.

Droid X, Droid 2 and Droid Pro all have pretty good exchange support. We have a mixed exchange environment here with strong mobile device requirements. A lot of people here are running Droid X and Droid 2 with no problems.

I think the Droid Pro is an awesome concept, and I think I’d love the keyboard, but there are zero signs that Moto has plans to continue developing further android updates which is a major issue to me.

Good Hardware is nothing without good software.

If you’re open to on-screen keyboard, I would go for the Droid X 2. Rumored to be dropping on May 26th and should be launching with Gingerbread.

Gotta run a custom ROM, which I’m not sure exists for your phone. Best bet is to install LauncherPro and set it to hide them so you forget about them.

Jeff you’re going to stab a kitten trying to relearn to type on a touch screen. I still miss blackberry and even Nokia for the keyboards. The Droid Pro might be worth a try if it’s at least on 2.2? Otherwise HTC gives the best UI/experience out of the box so go that route.

The battery life is going to suck too. BBM can go to hell. Gtalk is fine. Nothing integrates like a blackberry so that will take some getting used to. I still don’t have my facebook calendar integrated into my phone calendar. But there’s so much freaking dev support on these phones compared to blackberry that you can get a custom solution for just about everything.

Oh? OK then.

Sorry not ALL apps just the bloatware preloaded shit.

Even that I didn’t know. I’ve never played with titanium.
