Official Android thread

Nah he still does he moved up…but he can still hook people up.

Holy shit, thanks LZ.

PM’ed sir evolve

WAT

Jeff didn’t tell you???

Send him a txt he got some hook up a week or so ago…txt him.

Hell for saving someone $30-45 by hooking them up with the data plan, I’d be willing to throw monetary compensation his way, lol. If that’s true, I’ll definitely think about hitting him up, that’s huge.

So yeah, still looking at/for apps. Wanna be a bit more smartphone/pda savvy.

Yeah, back in the day Evolve would even throw around BB Pearls like they were rice at weddings but I guess all he can do now is data plans…

What kind of apps do you want? Fun? Productivity? Communication? Speak child!

MOBOOST start listing some good apps…

Im pissed the one to tether over wifi won’t work on 2.0/Droid :frowning:

he’s really good. he even got my blackberry storm 2 to me earlier and was able to get one of his friends at AT&T to activate it for me with no data plan. worked out real well all in all.

Like I said, I’m new to apps, so I don’t even know what’s out there. It looks like they come with integrated email, facebook and nav, so that’s 3 down. The appkiller sounds good. Is there any way for them to get on a network (like home)? I’d love to connect to my home network and grab some pics, documents, etc and then email them or send them to somebody else w/out having to get on my lap or desktop.

I guess you nailed it when you said fun, productivity and comms. Any and all of those would help, I like a little of everything, lol.

Would something like IMDB and Fandango be apps or just websites on the browser? I like checking movies out with my phone and seeing times, etc. Being able to open up a Fandango app would be pimp.

What’s the deal with email on these things? I’ve got like 3-4 email accounts on different servers (school, personal, professional, etc) and would love to have 1 app control them all. It’d be cool to just see that I have an email, open up the app and it just shows me that I’ve got email on my yahoo or hotmail accounts w/out having to go to separate sites or apps for each one.

I saw they have instant messaging, is it an all-encompassing deal or just a yahoo/google type account? I’d also like to snare all my im’s into one app too, manage em all that way.

How bout a dyno app? I know it sounds goofy but isn’t there different drivetrain loss ratios for each kind of dyno? A cool dyno app should be able to ask you what your measured crank hp is and then automatically convert your wheel horse for you, take the guess work out. I guess that’d be a little subjective though wouldn’t it?

Ok so do we need to know this guy to get hooked up or do we just pm him and strike it up? I don’t know how I’d feel if I was him, getting random messages asking me to hook people up I didn’t even know. Then again, that’s not my problem, I was just wondering though. The wife could use a data plan for her Treo too…

Ohhh and banking too! I’m always checking/paying my acct’s online and doing it with my Dare sucks (well it’s fine for what kind of phone it is, lol) so having a Chase/HSBC/Citi app that takes me to my acct’s would rock. I realize most of what I want can prolly be done by just going to their sites on the phone, but I’d rather just click and be there and check my balance or send a payment/transfer. Paypal too.

Ok work with me here as I have been in Europe for the last three months with no data plan, and therefore am not to up to date on many apps other than what I read, and also, am using 1.5 as opposed to 2.0 on a much older device (G1) so if many of these features come standard on the Droid im sorry.

My only pay program is Advanced Task Manager - Which was the only task killer at the time I payed $1 for but I guess there is task killer now so USE A PROGRAM LIKE THIS. As good as android is at keeping background programs running using almost no resources, you will still save a lot of batt by killing them.

For Facebook I use Babbler - I guess FB just launched their first android app (even though I heard FB and google have some beef) but most people still prefer Babbler

I dont Tweet but Twitdroid - Seems to be hands down the best Twitter app.

For all email accounts K-9 Mail - I dont know who figured out how to direct push hotmail to second party clients but K9 does it. If this is a common thing now a days I apologize but at the time I DL’d it, this was a bitch to do.

Anycut - Reallllyyyyyy handy app for making a shortcut to ANYTHING. A specific setting you want (although there are a few easy toggle setting apps) and etc.

I use Spelldial - Just a quick way to T9 search your phone book for easy access to contacts.

GDocs - Write and edit word and spreadsheet docs.

Locale is pretty impressive - You can set up conditions that trigger user defined actions based on shit such gps location, battery life and incoming sms and calls. For instance, when im in class, the phone recognizes my GPS location and turns volume off and wifi on… etc.

Shop Savvy - The whore app for android is no doubt amazingly cool but does need a little more vendor support in the states.

If youre really that unhappy with the browser (which I think is amazing) try Opera Mini or Steel - I hear Opera Mini compresses pages up to 90% but I never used it so I cant attest to how it is.

One of those apps that may be a standard feature on 2.0 is Save MMS - Which just lets you save media messages (a feature that was not available before cupcake).

Also something that may be standard on the Droid is Missed Call - Which simply lets the led flash in increments and colors of your choosing based on MMS/SMS/Incoming Call/Missed Call/Battery/Calender/Etc

Mobile Banking - From Bank of America is the only mobile banking app I know of right now but im sure others will follow.

For an planner I use Astrid, for a notepad AK Notepad, for weather The weather Channel, flashlight I use Flashlight, for a stopwatch Ultimate Stopwatch, on/off wifi Quick WiFi, Tune Wiki is a really badass app that takes a music program to the next level. Meebo or Hello AIM are the best two IM apps IMHO. Wiki Mobile, a great Wikipedia app, Multi Reader 1.6.1, for text to speech, and there are a lot more that I dont have time to post as my class is ending.

And then there is the apps that are on IPhone too like Imeem and Shazam.

Yes im far from a power user and im sure guys like LZ with time could find the true boundaries of the software and explain far better than I could, but the shit does everything I need it to do. Ill still maintain though its not so much the market that I love about the phone, as it is the actual Google services and how they sync with the device. Google Talk, Voice, Mail, Maps, Calender and Contacts all work seamlessly with services I use pretty regularly on my PC and in addition, sync beautifully when appropriate.

And like I said though guys, 2 months is a looooonnnnggg time to be away from the market so im sure there are soooooooo many more things im missing out there and obviously I use my phone different from you so just look at the market and search by popularity for each section youre interested in. I find in general, most apps are not as polished as IPhone’s, but then again, you can tell that some of these seriously effective and efficient apps are actually just created by some nerd pounding away in a basement in Deutschland. All it takes is one idea to be shared in the market before a serious programing company steals it and makes it a beauty.

And yes LZ, the tethering is my most used function

So do you have an apps store right on the phone like iPhone/BB store?

Thanks for that low-down, definitely helpful hearing it from someone who’s been using it for awhile. By the time I upgrade, there will definitely be more and hopefully better apps out.

yes, there is an app store for android

I’m going to fucking ban all of you.

No, I dont work at VZW.

Yes, you need a data plan for a smartphone. Why the fuck would you want one without data? What kind of FGGT fucking poser are you?

Dre, as much as you want an iphone, on VZW, its just not going to happen. Sorry bro.

No, I cannot “hook it up” to get you around the data plan requirements.

busted

I lol’d

Knew it was too good to be true, lol. TINSTAFL :frowning:

Oh well.

haha look that this commercial of verizon making fun of att 3g coverage

No, there are many many many many many apps, and believe me, from the sound of user you are, they will be more than enough for you. Im just saying for instance that dynometer app that the IPhone has, still has not been developed for one reason or another, but with that many open source developers out there its just a matter of time.

Yeah I’m definitely new to these but I’m sure I’ll catch on quickly and be able to tailor them to what I need them for. The main this is that I have ideas for what I need based on what I already want out of my current phone.

I came to terms with this a while ago. all i want is an eris or droid with verizon, or an iphone with someone else (I would prefer to stay with verizon).

if i could get an eris for under 200 I would definitely do that. I prefer the size of that phone, and am I correct that speculation says there will likely be a 2.0 upgrade available soon?

how would gps work on that though, it would be extra for now, or I just get an app?
