«OFFICIAL» NYSpeed Showcases: Grand Prix Watkins Glen July 3rd to 5th 2009

Nice pic Ian. You’ve certainly improved a TON over the past year.

Thanks. Im still looking for that editing niche, but overall im starting to become pleased with my results

Do you have that higher res, I could use a new background. Somewhere around 1600 in width?

Hows 5914 x 2072 ??? haha

fap fap fap

Cool wide shot.

Thanks

Man, that S60 R is awesome!

Well that explains why he wrecked a customer car! :spank:

UGH they sounded good. Straight piped I5 FTW

Yeah, I think next year parade laps are going to need to be more regulated…either by the Glen having to get nasty or by Onyx/event organizers keeping people from being irresponsible. This is what happens when screwing around goes to far, IMO.

To everyone that doesn’t know the story, and who are making assumptions / listening to rumors about what happened, READ HERE.

The only change next year is that we need to sign waivers before driving on track. We’ll probably get more time on track too

So it isn’t a problem with track officials or the event organizers that two people were “spoken to” about their inappropriate actions and one person wrecked a car on a parade lap? And everyone agrees that no changes are necessary to ensure that this doesn’t happen again?

As for the debris on the track, should that be a concern on a parade lap? Even with debris, I think it’s assumed that cars on a parade lap should be going slow enough to deal with anything short of an oil slick or an ice patch, but maybe I’m wrong.

I’m not concerned with who’s car it was or who was driving it. That’s between them.

No, it’s not a problem actually. Bing was moving left and right at about 40mph because we he was stuck behind some old guys in Corvettes, and they told him to stay straight. And the official was laughing about how fast the Supra pulled away, and asked him to slow it down just a bit which he did since I was riding with him the next time we went on track.

But you wouldn’t know that since you weren’t there

Yes, it’s a concern that the track has already addressed. The pace car took everyone off the race line and over the stones kicked up by the slicks of the IRL cars. At any speed, taking a turn over debris can cause traction problems. The Supra was directly behind a Camary pace car.

I think the important points to consider are:

  1. The 2 people in question were warned
  2. One of those people actually wrecked a car the following day after being warned.

No offense to this event, I actually would have loved to attend it. But I think those who think they can drive fast during this event should participate in an actual track day at the Glen, with proper safety gear. Think of all of the safety concerns that “hot dogging” during such events may cause. Not to mention the possibility of getting the event canceled the following year.

A warning implies that there were consequences for their actions, of which there were none. If they were doing something that was potentially dangerous to themselves or anyone else they would have been pulled from any further laps immediately. But they were not ‘warned’ of anything, simply asked.

Again man, neither of you guys were there. Ask any of the other 20+ NYSpeed members their opinion of how dangerous they were driving. There were plenty of others there who can tell you neither was a ‘big deal.’ No one was ‘hot dogging’ out there.

You also have to remember that the glen allows ANYONE on opening day, even people in the worst rusted, un-safe and non-mechanically sound cars, trucks, CONVERSION VANS, etc. to lap the track in the same fashion as we did every spring. The only difference is that they don’t lap the track immediately following open wheel race cars on slicks.

And the event definitely is NOT canceled for next year.

I think it’s easy to see how someone would get the wrong impression. I apologize for not being there, I guess that means that I’m not allowed to read posts related to the event or form an opinion based on those posts.

lol, you’re allowed to read into whatever you like. Bing was obviously excited when he made his post. It was much less dramatic than that. Rest assured that if anyone was being unsafe they would not have been allowed on track again, and that someone from our group (dmoffitt, silver, Luke or any of the other members who are experienced on this track) would have said something before we went out for another day and 7 more laps.

So if you’re concerned about saftey, come out next year and see for yourself

If I was going to make the ~850 mile drive, I’d at least be going to an actual track day.

I was there and he didn’t do anything wrong. end of story.

I had a blast and will be returning next year.
