Oh Look, Another NYS Inspection Question

your friend sounds like a real douche, I don’t see how anyone could be friends with someone like that…

It’s all documented; I started looking into building it. They’re not that crazy complex; just need the proper microcontroller and know how to write code. As well as access to the machine to see what it’s looking for and at what addresses…

I can use HP tuners to check readiness monitors

I assume there is some sort of setup information then it asks for monitor status etc…

From the video the kid is probably using an Arduino board http://www.arduino.cc/

Also using this for debugging might be useful - Bus Pirate - DP

It would probably take some time to figure out how once the software functions are written it would be pretty easy and could be profitable…100% emulation of an OBDII computer with all readiness monitors set properly.

This sounds like a great project for a Raspberry Pi.

Hes on nyspeed too, I think his user name is SHMOSHMOOSTSHFOSHU, his mainstream opinions and views are actually really well received by most.

And from my quick investigation, looks like he was selling this for $200 back in 2010, and now hes kind of gone off the grid but replies to people on occasion and wants $600 just for the software to program the VIN… yikes. Im gonna try to get in touch with him.

The option of the sim is over. we have confiscated a few. they give themselves away
there are people down state in jail for using sims others facing 10s of thousands in fines.

I’m pretty sure if someone wanted to they could emulate a legit PCM for whatever year including proper delays and correct responses…

Just because others have attempted and failed I wouldn’t rule it out as impossible.

There will always be a way around this. It just depends who has the resources to do it. For every one person that gets caught I’m sure thousands pull it off. Is it a chance you are willing to take? Personally I would just rather have something older that doens’t need to be scanned for inspection.

If you’re doing this as a one off or individual thing and not a shop doing it :tif: on ever getting caught

Tons of people install stock PCMs for inspection and pull them back out after inspection for an aftermarket PCM.

Just drive a car near 20 yrars old and emissions aren’t a problem.

Jtag/bus pirate onto the OBDII connector at inspection station record 40-50 cars being inspected or whatever you feel is a safe sample size.

ELM327 connector converts data to a nice 38400 bps serial output.

Analyze the data look for anything weird NYS might be doing IE throwing a bunch of random junk or malformed OBDII request.

Looks like a couple people have written OBDII emulation software make sure you emulate all of the PIDS/other data the current PCM outputs

Add delay to responses based off sample data or any other misc information NYS checks

OBDII isn’t some protocol that was designed with security and NYS either wrote the software for inspections or put it out to bid and took whoever was the cheapest either way

Sure it can be done, the problem is finding someone to invest the time and money into building it. How many states even require ODBII as part of their inspection? It’s going to be a tiny percentage of drivers in just those states who even care about such a device. Pretty much you need someone who’s techie enough to DIY it for personal use and release it just to be a car guy legend.

Maybe I will put it on my list after the cell tower project

Either way just avoid OBDII unless your stock PCM can handle it or keep emissions stuff…It’s not a huge deal to throw a cat on a car.

We found one sim that was being used in the falls by records in that, the pcm VIN showed up a few times in different parts of the state. The vin wasn’t even for an obdII vehicle.

Well that’s just lazy. If I wrote the code I would definitely require the user to enter their own VIN. I’d probably make them enter it twice to make sure it was correct even.

I assume Pauly is BPD?

And LZ, if you wanna take a crack at designing and doing a small run in any sort of timely manner, ill gladly front the supplies and test vehicle  I mean my friend.

ahhh no. DMV
