My car is pretty rusty and when taking of some bolts in the past week some of them have torn off leaving the rest in the slot. I’ve tried drilling them out but that doesn’t seem to be working to well. Is there a more efficient way of taking them out or a special technique for drilling them…any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Soak them in WD40 for a few minutes or even 1/2 an hour (be liberal), and get what is called an easy out or extractor kit.
These kitts can be found at crappy tire or Princess Auto and might run you about 10-30 bucks, but Princess would be your best bet for a cheap-use-it-a-couple-times kind of set.
This is the best method of removing broken bolts. Sometimes if you really can’t get them out then a little bit of heat usually helps but this method should be done only by a trained profesional!
for 200 bucks get them to do it. You don’t want to start messing around with that if you don’t know what your doing. On my old engine these broke. I had my buddies shop fix them. If these are broken off inside the head you need special extractor (or they drill and tap) to get it out. If its broken and still sticking out of the head, they tourch them and slow turn them out.
This one I leave to pro’s since its not worth headache.
If you need to use a drill, use carbide bits. These suckers are expensive but very strong. I don’t think you can find them at CT, could get them at Brafasco.
They actually have reverse drill bits, if your drill will turn backwards (some old ones don’t) they will start drilling, and if they catch, you get a super luckey break, and the bolt comes right out.
Again, Though, if you have the skills, be carefull, if you don’t think you can do it, listen to Andrew and pay the couple hundred.
