Found my Exhaust Leak

I finally found where the exhaust leak was coming from on my car. 1 on the 8 studs in the engine block that the exhaut manifold bolts to is broken off.

Is there any way to remove it?

The only thing i can think of is to drill it out but i dont think i have enought room.

I appreciate any advice

thanks

Your best bet it likley a easy out from sears… If that doesn’t work then your going to have to drill it out… which will suck and can be pretty dangerous when working on the head of your engine. Metal Drill bits then to own aluminum pretty hard.

I had the same one broken when I bought my car. Finally fixed it a couple months ago. I had to drill it out (easy outs weren’t doing the trick) very carefully, then take the chunks out with a little pick. Once the hole was clean enough, i ran a bottoming tap into the hole.

A couple of the threads got messed up so I used this a thread repair stuff from Canadian Tire. I forget who makes it but it’s a 2 part putty that you mix together (comes in 2 syringes) and you put it in the messed up hole. You then put some realease stuff on your new stud, screw it into the hole and leave it for 5 mins. You then take it out and let the stuff set for a while. The package says half an hour, but it can’t hurt to wait longer. Then your hole is as good as new.

It worked fine for me. Haven’t had any problems, and everything is tight as a drum now, no leaks here.

I didn’t use a heli-coil because I didn’t want to inadvertantly drill into a water jacket while making the bigger hole for the heli-coil.

Just make sure you are extremely carefull when drilling, and don’t mess up the gasket surface for the mani. Shouldn’t be as much of a problem for you though, with the master cylinder on the other side you’ve got lots of room to work.

Didd you drill out the broken bolt with the engine in the car?’

And what drill bit should i use? (titanium, zirconium nitrade)
and what size sould i start with?

thanks

I used a bunch of small sizes between 1/64 and 1/8. Prepare to break a few bits.

And my engine was in the car. A real PITA with the master cylinder in the way. Yours shouldn’t be too bad with the RHD.

Be sure to try the easy outs first.

Could find easyouts on Sunday cause everyone was close (a am vey impatient) Si i drilled out the broken stud. Today i picked up a stud and exhaust maniflod gasket from nissan as well as a tap or a die or whatever you call it to thread a hole. I threaded the hole (turned out very nice  ) But i still put this stripped thread repair stuff in to be safe.

I appreciate the help and i am very satisfied with the repair

Thanks for those who helped me out :thumb

Good to hear it worked out for you. Glad I could help! 8)
