torrents FTW
torrents blow, im sorry but i want my full BW when downloading and not be forced to share it with anyone else.
You aren’t really sharing it at all. I am usually getting pretty damn good speeds with torrents…To each his own I guess :meh:
no seeding with torrents? since when?
Well like anything you download on the internet…it has to be uploaded first.
ok i think im getting the TV also, seems the only thing that i care about that fios doesnt have is MSG HD for the sabres, ican deal with that i guess. cheaper than what im paying for directv, can u haggle with them for free shit?
BuickGN = dude from the new Die Hard that had like a supercomputer lab running out of his basement on generators :krazyjon:
Ok my fios was installed saturday, overall a pretty straight forward install for the tech, apt complex had all the fiber already run, so they just had to pull it to my unit. Took appox 4 hours for everything, TV and internet, tech was good at installing but stupid as far as everything else went. IE didnt know much about what the STB did etc…
Internet is fast as shit, I downoaded a 4 gig movie last night in under 20 minutes. But, i might switch to the normal 20/5 only because after thinking about it, im really in no hurry to dl shit like i thought i was.
The TV on the other hand, ehh the HD dvr STB blows compared to Directv, the guide is all fucked up as far as looks and functionability, too clunky, none of the esata, usb or any other port is enabled, which blows for adding an external HDD. PQ is good, im not sure its better than directv tho, SD is better for some reason, but HD doesnt seem as good, maybe its just me. So my next step is getting rid of this STB and getting a Tivo and a cable card, only thing i would loose is the ability to use the on demand crap.
UPDATE: I just ordered a Tivo HD DVR, 179.99 from tivos site. Omg so much more you can do with it compared to the verizon. Verizon is coming out with a M cable card as soon as my box comes in. Netflix streaming, you tube viewing on tv, record shows from the tivo and burn them to a dvd on your PC. Movies on your pc can be transfered to the tivo also. I would suggest this route to anyone who has the archaic Verizon STB.
Another  to Fios Internet.
We went with the 20/20 package for internet - I will be doing some hosting and such, and wanted the larger upstream. 20/5 will be more than adequate for just about anyone.
As fast as this is, I’d love to see the 50/20 service. To my chagrin, however, I’m noticing that the vast majority of downloads can’t come close to meeting 20mbps. The servers simply can’t do it. With newsgroups and torrents, however, I’ve seen a marked increase in speed.
Overall, for 70 bones a month, there is flat out no beating the throughput of Fios. Based on some of the reviews here, I’m going to give TV a chance soon.
mine pegs the Ngs i use.
its so nice.
this is available in my area now.
so i have the computers upstairs, but the tv in the basement with the 360. my wireless router is crap that far down. makes d/l movies on the xbox a pain.
so would/could i get 2 routers, 1 for the upstairs and another for the basement? or another solution?
also, do ALL services go over the existing coax in my home? i don’t think i have any telcom copper anymore (chopped a lot up when i went VOIP).
^
anyone?
word, im on the same newsgroup hosting as you i think, fucking love sucking down blurays in like an hour or less. i smile everytime i see the download speed.
honestly your wireless router probably sucks, the one verizon installs has really good signal strength and speed even compared to my “business class” linksys router.
edit: kevin, no on demand with tivo hd dvr thought right? that was kind of a deal breaker for me…
yes, it sucks. Netgear. Hit or miss with them. so VZ gives you a wireless router as part of the install? do you know the make/model?
That might solve my problem…I only got a wired Motorola VOIP cable modem.
And all services over the COAX in my house…no POTS lines needed for anything?
i don’t remember off hand, the only downside is it is NOT gigabit, so I am probably going to be buying another gigabit switch. It seems very solid so far though, and yea, those home grade netgears are pretty awful. I went through probably 3 or 4 of them in less than 2 years.
hmm, just priced it. the budle plan is more expensive than my package with cablevision if I keep a phone line.
and the difference between essentials fios and extreme hd is only 1 channel…
i think it’s the hw rental that is much more…it would cost me $40/mo in the hd/dvr rental equipment alone…
extreme HD has about 40 more HD channels, mainly sports and some other off channels like FX/TBS/TNT. it’s worth the extra $10 or whatever if you have a HD TV.
ALSO, if you have a verizon cell phone, you could likely get upgraded to extreme HD for free in the bundle… i did after about 4 phone calls.
i punched in my zip code, and the funny thing is, only 1 channel was added in the line-up for extreme. 342 for essentials, 343 total for extreme. go figure.
From what I see, FX/TBS/TNT HD etc, are all in the Essentials line-up at least in my area.
