When I replaced my windshield I had one of the big companies do it, I got a good price. I don’t think you have to worry about the rust forming because of the replaced windshield since they have to properly seal the window in place.
Another issue you may have to worry about though would be the seal not being as good as the original, a friend got his windshield replaced for cheap and he hears louder wind sounds coming though…
Thanks for the insight!.. So in yur opinion, would you say go for the big reputable company to ensure a good job? or do you feel I can get the same thing done for a couple hundred cheaper elsewhere?
please anyone who would like to add to this topic please feel free.
I would go with the cheaper one, honestly it isn’t a hard job, they just pop the old windshield out, and drop the new one in, then seal it up. Cheaper doesn’t mean some guy that said he changed a windshield once though, go to somewhere that does it often, talk to the guy, if he seems to know what he’s doing then go for it and save your money.
If you have rust forming around the windshield you HAVE to get it properly fixed first! I had a similiar situation on my car where the rust was forming from under the windshield and actually cracked my windshield in 4 places. I had all the rust repaired and it has been perfect since then. Just because the windshield is sealed in doesnt mean it will stop rust from forming.
So, my advice to you would be to get any rust around the windshied fixed before you put a new one in.
Point well taken, as far as I know so far… it seems to not have any rust at all… but, you’ll never know what might be found underneath… my fingers are crossed on that one.
I had to have my car fixed. The rust was what caused the crack. I got
Standard Auto Glass to do it… they came out and did it at my house.
When the dude removed the glass he showed me the rust and said it
needed to be fixed or it would break the new glass as well.
I then took out the grinder, grinded down the rust from both the outside
and the inside, and cut out any places where it got too thin or was very
rusty. I then cut out some scrap metal, drove the car down the street to
my buddies house and got him to weld plates in. Then i drove it home,
finished off by grinding it smooth and called Standard back. They came
the next day, and it was back in.
It took me an afternoon to fix it myself and cost $250 for them to do the
install, but it looks great.
Another thing, you will need the new moulding for the outside of the
windshield… Don’t get the OEM style one, its just expensive and a waste
of money. Get them to use the generic one, it looks nice and clean, I like
it better than stock.
I dont need my windsheild to be replaced but I noticed in the top driver side corner a small bit of rust forming. How would I go about taking care of this problem.
