I worked for Wegmans for 7 years through high school and college. Started at a little over $5/hr and left just under $10/hr. I earned a scholarship through their program, which was nice even if it was only $1500 a year. I also coached hockey camps (still do) in the summers. In school I didn’t really have much time to work, but I did RA for a year and a half… definitely was the best gig for the compensation. It saved me a ton on room and board and I had my own room. Sure there were times when it sucked but overall, definitely worth it.
Red Lobster as a host for 2 months, $7/hr
Petsmart Warehouse (in Brockport, now closed) for about 2 years, ~$8.50/hr
Harris RF Communications (Co-Op/Intern) 15 months - ~$15/hr
J&J Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics - 2 years - ~$16/hr
Year :1997
Company: Comtest-Int (now out of business)
Pay: $20 / hour, maybe 10 hours a week or so.
Job: Webmaster
I also took some BS work/study job on campus for a couple weeks folding paper for $4 an hour, quit that pretty fast for obvious reasons.
I worked as a valet with Josh… I LOVED that job. went home with your pay for your shift THAT NIGHT if you worked a restaurant…the mall account kinda sucks because it goes on paper and you get paid for your hours weekly, but at least the hours were more “regular”…I fully enjoyed running around parking cars for 6hrs 2-3 nights a week to pay the bills. Got to drive some seriously awesome shit too once in a while. IIRC it was $8/hr, restuarants tips usually put you ahead of that…but the mall is all hourly rate, can’t keep tips. (this is all if nothing has changed since I left). I still have done some special occations where they did private parties and needed a bunch of guys, that’s always a blast to do once in a while too.
I worked at Dresser-Rand converting old dwg’s from the 1950’s and up to some form of electronic file, whether it be tif’s or pdf’s or what ever I was told that day… Probably one of the most interesting jobs i’ve ever had.
Worked 20-25 hours a week, $12.50 hr
College
New York State Thruway Authority (Toll Collecting)
30-40 hours a week.
$20/hour about (including overtime etc)
During my tenure at Fredonia:
-Autozone; ~$8 or so, 5-10hrs a week
-Barback; can’t remember, can’t remember
Job: Student assistant, RIT Provost’s office and office of the VP for Student Affairs
Basically I delivered inter-office mail, scheduled meetings, ordered lunch and organized conference calls/luncheons, etc. I loved that job, and worked it throughout college.
$7.50/hr, 15-20 hrs a week.
I had a few different jobs when I was in college. Don’t really remember the pay but it wouldn’t really be relevant since I’m so old anyway.
CA1 Services: Plane side rep at the Buffalo airport. Basically got to cruise around in a van on the taxiways dodging jets and chatting up hot flight attendants making sure they didn’t need anything just before takeoff.
Walmart: Cashier then electronics guy.
Softbank Services: Phone tech support Sony DSS
ClientLogic: Phone tech support Iomega
One summer while I was home I drove cab with a cab company based on an indian reservation. That was an experience.
Another one for the valet gig. Best job I had hands down. Kevin and Josh were great to work for and the job was super fun. I worked at Moes, John and Mary’s, golf course (also super fun), and a pizzeria.
worked at ross rental ~8.50 an hour.
then got an internship at cannon design, after 1 month switched to part time at 11 an hour until i finished my 2 year.
now i work full time making more monies and go to school part time, with work paying for me to go to school.
there was lots of side jobs with a few houses i did landscaping and mowing at weekly for an extra 40 bucks or so a week.
Worked at Ted’s for 5 years during Junior high to Early College maybe? Made a little more than minimum at the time and worked about 35 hours a week.
Went to Derrick after that throughout college, made 10.50? an hour except Friday nights and Saturdays it was time and a half. Maybe 20-30 hours.
X2 was pretty fun. The restraunts were where it was at. Working at Shanghi Reds on a Friday night paid more than a 40 hour work week at min wage.
Wegmans for almost 4 years (I think $9 an hour 25-35hrs)
Delta Sonic for a year (always varied since it was mostly tips 25-35hrs)
Put up fences for a summer at Classic Fence ($10 35-40hrs) while in the winter I de-iced planes at the Buffalo Airport with IDS($13.50 i think at 20-30hrs)
Derrick for a few months ($10.5 or 11? 40hrs+)
Also did a bunch of sidework as far as construction/roofing/etc and for 4 years in a row did put up and take down season for Awnings and Boat covers all over WNY.
The best thing you can do, is find something SEASONAL for RIGHT NOW to make a bunch of easy money this summer prior to school, then take a simple 1 or 2 night per week simpleton job and try to ride out the savings from the summer. Landscaping, mowing lawns, etc. stuff that any monkey can do but lazy people pay lots of money for. Something with loose hours. otherwise, you’re going to end up having a hard time getting some shitty min wage job because of your availability and you’ll end up working lots of hours just to make shit money and be stressed out about not having enough time to dedicate to school.
Ran my own detailing business out of the parents garage during summers (before I was qualified for an internship in my field). I had already had about 3 years experience working for a shop during high school, so getting it started was easy. Had an account with a body shop and a used car lot, as well as a bunch of personal cars from referrals. Hung out with my dog for about 6 hours/day while I’d clean up 2 cars, averaged $50/hour. Did so well with it I almost didn’t go to college.
The people I know who made the best money while still in college were waiters or bartenders.
Flexible schedules and cash
Edit: Stripping is also a good way to make cash while in school
I got just enough lawns that I could mow them all in one day 7-10 at 25$ a pop
worked one day a week and made a couple hundred
plus if u do a good job they will almost always ask u to do mulch, cleanup, etc. which allows u to make even more and easy to find college buddys who will work for you at 10$/hr cash…you can see how that can quickly become easy money
