possible electric problem

i started up the car this morning and my tripometer was at zero and I knew it was around 500 miles. I started the car up a few hours after I shut it off and again the trip went to zero. That is the only thing that is messing up on the dash. Anyone know what this could be??? My voltage is not dropping while driving but I know that is because the altenator. The car starts fine. I have no other problems then that. I was told that it could be bad ground wire, some harness behind the engine that if one of my plugs were arcing it would mess it up, or my dash is losing memory. I got a Optimum Red top and it has been working fine.

if your time isn’t resetting it’s not the battery… as said, it sounds like a short to ground to the ecm… wish i knew more about chevy electronics to help you out

mine did that on my VW and it was the fust for the instrument cluster.

Well I guess i will try to look at the fuses. Just sucked that it did it at 4:00 this morning and couldn’t look at it. i also looked at it this afternoon but only could look for a second…not enough time.

I just noticed yesterday that when I start the car initially, the gauges drop all the way to the very lowest they go then the needles skyrocket to the top of the gauge and drop slowly back to normal. If I turn the car off and turn it on just a second or two later, the problem doesn’t happen. It is only when the car is off for a few minutes or longer.

yes,

???

the gauges all do that

Well, I found out what the problem was…I am a dumbass! I realized that my battery cables were not tight. I am happy that it did not cost nothing but a twist of a wrench
