Power line safety debate

OK so it shouldn’t stretch toooooo much. I was wondering how many times a week he was going to have to tighten his dock lines as the power line sagged lower and lower. Maybe once every other week. Should be touch the ground by August, at which point he can secure it with a tent stake.

That rope will wear the coating on his hots in a few years, should be a great show, how much is admission?

Ok, so anyone here have some sort of electrical cert to back up their opinion?

I do not, but I have a lot of experience behind me. I will grab the next 5 licensed guys that walk into my office and ask what they think if you would like.

Wouldnt this just fall under common sense??

Didnt everyone see the Louie the Lightning bug cartoon guy PSAs as a kid telling you to never mess with power lines? Im pretty sure my 6yr old would say you shouldnt toss a rope over a power line and tie it to your house.

home improvement message boards exist. crosspost?

1 would be fine. I’d just like to hear a certified opinion so I can relay it when I tell him what an idiot he is.

wait… what? he tied his power lines to his gas meter? what? you have GOT to be kidding. Please tell me you’re kidding.

No joke man. I will admit it took me a minute for my brain to fully process what he was explaining to me because my “THIS DOES NOT MAKE SENSE” alarm kept going off.

The way I see this: If he is half assing something that is a huge safety risk at his home with his infant, what is he half assing in the banking software world. I would be very afraid of this guy.

Luckily he’s in sales. He’s actually a pretty good salesman. Hell, he convinced himself this was a good idea so convincing people to buy something should be no problem at all.

Soon to be the ER

Fixed

doubt the gas would ever explode, but he’s now potentially wired the main feed into a ground rod anyone can touch and potentially electrified every gas line in his house, wow. They tell you not to touch a STRING on a kite if it’s tangled into a power line, he’s got ropes driectly to a grounded pipe…

They should be

The wire is not the part that distorts, its the tightening lugs on your grommets. If you really do have an aluminum feeder those should be checks every few years by a qualified person.

It won’t explode, unless there is a spark. Also gas meter/piping usually are grounded somewhere. It wouldn’t be bad if this was the DCW/Meter though, as grounding to that is normal practice.

That being said, this is still a stupid idea, but I do not think moisture in the rope will conduct well enough over that long of a distance to cause harm to a person. The proper thing to do would have the electric company to come and tighten the wiring at the transformer. There needs to be some slack in the wiring to keep the wire from consistently breaking. I mean go to your office building, find the water entrance to that and touch it. The building service entrance is grounded through the DCW, and you can touch it fine with out killing yourself.

As long as he has an indockline fuse he should be fine. Another good use for powerlines is a homemade swing for the newborn.

Asked an electrical engineer I work with. He is a specialist in high voltage, and works closely with national grid. PE, magna cum laude etc. One of the most intelligent people I’ve met, albeit kind of square

His answer: Not a good idea. Most of what fry posted covers it. A damp rope is a conductor. Odds are it will just ground at the meter he has it tied to, but it’s still a risk. He should have an electrician look at the connection to the house.

Tell your friend to call his power company before he kills himself.

They will come out and fix it. They can’t collect money from dead customers. They do not want you touching the line from the pole to the house at all in any way. From the meter to the pole is their responsibility.

Jay your logic seems pretty spot on. The coating on the rope isn’t going to do shit as far as protecting him from getting zapped. The coating on the rope is far from an effective insulator. He’s gonna kill someone.

Pretty sure the power company is responsible for wire from the street to the meter. Make them fix it. Mine was redone at my old house for free.
