Pros/Cons of Plasma/LCD/DLP?

So I bought a new place and I’m looking at getting a nice big wall-mount flat panel TV. There’s only one problem: I don’t know jack shit about nice big wall-mount flat panel TV’s

From what I’ve concluded with my own eyes, LCD is by far superior in every way except price. Plasma is good, but I’ve heard from friends that own them that the build quality just isn’t there. And I’ve been told to stay away from DLP altogether (can you even wall-mount DLP?).

Anyone have any insight into these three? When posting, please include justification and any personal experiences… posts like “I HEARD DLP GIVES YOU SEIZURES” don’t help me :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks guys!

You info is backwards.

Plasma is awesome for HDTV and movies, but is more expensive than LCD, and not so great for games I hear.

LCD is great, but not as flat as plasma, and nowhere near the contrast ratio. However, they are cheaper and more suitable for games.
LCD’s will last forever.

Personally I would go LCD. Plasma looks better, but the price is like hfhjgak.

I think you’re confusing a real LCD with LCD Projection. If you take HP for example, they sell a 37" LCD and a 42" plasma for the same price. LCD Projection, on the other hand, is way cheaper, has a small viewing angle, and terrible image quality.

Well from what I’ve heard, and looked into myself. LCD is the way to go. They last longer, and have great displays. I’ve heard that plasma TV’s die after a few years, but that was probably just the oldest versions.

LCD is just as good and it lasts longer than plasma. LCD is the way to go.

I have an LCD and i could not be happier. Plasma is just overpriced and they don’t last that long really.

Actually, you’re right, my bad.

I would still go with LCD projection though, if only for the versatility, long life, and improvement over CRT.

LCD:
-skinny and flat
-great for HDTV and DVD
-great for video games
-longer life than PLASMA

PLASMA:
-skinny and flat
-higher colour contrast than LCD
-REALLY great for HDTV and DVD. Everything is nice and bright and the image is very sharp.
-emit more heat and thus demonstrate a tendancy towards the below points:
-not so good for watching regular tv. Unless you don’t mind stretching the image, because if you don’t you have two bars along the side that can get burned into the screen.
-Plasmas like to burn images into the screen and do so much faster than LCD. Video games with static displays (life guages, scores etc. So basically every one) will burn fairly quickly into the screen. Same thing goes for sports if you watch a lot of hockey etc.

I used to be a salesman :stuck_out_tongue:

Flatscreen projection TVs do have terrible viewing angle, but LCD Projection is a massive improvement and very close, if not identical to, flatscreen LCD. Or at least the Sony WEGAs are.

B-Wurm

I was in the market for a tv for my room around christmas and learned alot about tvs. I went with a 32inch LCD wall mount in my room. Its not any great quality brand name like a sharp which is “THE KING” of LCD’s.

It really depends on what you need the tv for. I personally wanted something for my room that was compact and cheap but still had some good quality. I went with the LCD because it will outlast a plasma and it is HDTV compatible…ohh, and the other fact that it sticks out only 6.5inches from the wall including the 1.5inch stand compared to the 2+feet of a regular TV. Just remember that with a wall mount tv you will still have wires which, if your looking for a clean look you might have to call up a taper

Wow I’m surprised know one is sticking up for DLP. Your never going to get the kind of color on LCD as you will with DLP. Listen to me (this is what I do for a living) as far as anything goes for a wall mount Plasma is probably your best bet. You can get a decent plasma for a good price.

Pros
-great picture quality (1080p)
-size

Cons
-Heat and cooling problems
-Burning of images (even with pixel rotate)
-Life of screen

Now if you are looking at a DLP they are great for price. Just remember to get a beaded screen if your looking at one. They produce unbelievable blacks. And you can get them in 1080p also. Now remember you can get Hi Def if you don’t have a Hi Def source. DVD, Xbox360, Shaw digital, even Satellite don’t offer 1080 anything. they will most likely down steam it to 480i definition so make the right decision. Now the PS3 will have Blue Ray, and Full 1080i, so if your looking at one of those when it comes out it might be nice to have a HDTV. Hope this helps.

So your saying that there is no such thing as true hdtv?

Not as of yet in canada. Knowone is offering anything higher than 780p

Yeah but 780p IS highdef.
