Not really, you can have a camera that has far more capability than they need for these for a few hundred bucks. Now if you were buying them in bulk on a big gov’t contract you’d prob. get them even cheaper.
The camera has a flash, and plates are HIGHLY reflective, so night shots aren’t a problem.
And forget your plate cover ideas. Any city that gets these immediately has the police crack down big time on plate covers.
I dont know if it was mentioned yet but there will be no points added to your licence from a red light camera ticket.
Anyway, I doubt the city police are going to pull you over for plate covers, but its possible.
I would definately run them, but have my doubts about them actually working.
Obstructing the visibility of your plate in any means has always been a ticketable offense, that includes the covers and sprays designed to limit off angle visibility or reflectivity.
IIRC, MythBusters did an episode on plate filters and short of going past at 200MPH there wasn’t much that worked, but I can’t remember (or be bothered to search apparently).
Yeah I know they are illegal, but enforcement of things like this in the city is not like amherst/kenmore/etc. I would definitely be surprised if anyone got busted for them.
Where are you hearing that there is no points? I thought the argument when they were voting on this was that when they issue the fine, they immediately notify the insurance company.
Oh and another dumb question.
If you slam on your brakes and cross the line but still stop. How does the camera know you are stopping or moving through the intersection?
Also, if they detect if you run the red after the yellow, do they also detect if you stop and run it after the other side is green? If so, don’t they need the sensor that takes the picture active all the time and how does this effect people who creep 1/2 way into the intersection to get that much further ahead when the light goes green.
It was on the news last night, it came out of byron browns mouth. No points and no issues with insurance premiums rising.
I would imagine it would be more likely that it’ll be a tag-on offense, much like not having a front plate.
The city is installing these camera’s for revenue, they’ve admitted as much. It defeats their plan if they allow people to cruise around with plate covers. Revenue = more chances the BPD will get their raises.
They’re non-point tickets. It’s been in pretty much every article linked.
If you’re across the line you’ve run the light. Creeping forward, stopping late, or straight out running it is all the same legally so your argument is pointless.
Ah ok. I just remember when Shredd and Regan were promoting the movement against this, a lot of people were talking about points on them so didn’t know what came of that.
Ok. I never looked to have a argument against them, just curious how these things worked cuz I am the dumbass that will stop in the white zone. I guess if you arent going to make the stop in time, might as well at least go through it. Haha
If you don’t want the cops to get your money, don’t run yellow/red lights in the city. Like we’ll have any say in what happens with this anyways. Sounds like everyone on here makes running lights apart of their everyday agenda.
I understand you are not in control of the person behind you. That is why you let them rear end you at the red light.
Why aren’t you guys scared of red lights today? You really think this camera is going to change anything?
So you’re admitting to the fact that you do not have control over your vehicle no matter what speed you’re traveling??? You’re telling me that the camera will change the fact that you are driving too fast for conditions? The camera does nothing to effect your stopping distance or the conditions of the street. Those 2 things are the main factors in how you should drive, the camera will just catch you if you go through the light. I’ve been driving as long as anyone and I’ve only ever slid through 1 intersection due to ice and snow. I was 17 and it was my first time driving my trans am in the winter. It didn’t have any back brakes so it just plowed through the intersection. I was wrong. If there was a cop there or a camera I would have received a ticket. BUT the conditions weren’t only bad for me… so the vehicles waiting to enter the intersection were waiting to see what was going to happen with me before they proceeded… like humans would.
Or they will learn how to stop at red lights. I thought it was a pretty simple concept.
I agree 100%. Yes… rear end collisions will increase. They are slow speed and much more survivable than a t-bone collision from someone running a red light. Don’t talk about that though… these guys are more worried about $50 than someone’s safety.
When NYS bans them … then great. Are those other states ranked #1 for highest taxes ever? What about piss poor management of state money? No? NYS is. Thats why we are getting them.
The last place I’m bringing my bike is the city. Fuck that. How many lifted redneck trucks do you see in the city? 3? One of them was me, and I’m done paying $15 to park the fucking thing at the arena. The stopping distance on my truck is plenty short to make a complete stop from 35mph within the space between me and any vehicle in front of me, especially a motorcycle.
Again, I think you guys are missing something.
Why are all of these people running red lights in the first place? Why are you so concerned with not being able to stop? The road is the same. The weather is the same. The people are the same. Now all of a sudden there is a consequence if you don’t stop and immediately people forget how to drive and they are rear ending eachother left and right.
They aren’t going to reduce the time on a yellow light.
I’ve driven in the city enough to know how shitty it is. I avoid the city. There is no reason to go there. Ever. (Unless it is an event at the arena, in which case you just jump off the thruway, go to the arena and then go home).
^ amen.
These camera’s are no big deal. Everyone just needs to grow up. We have 0 control over this city.
If you don’t voice your opinion to your elected officials or go out and vote for them, then yes, you’re right, you have no control. For those who do take an active part, you do have some control.
why do you bother posting. just for the sake of arguing and starting shit with people?
i agree 100% with pat. you can still slide going 10 mph etc. so the light changes and you can either slide through or just keep going and be out of the way of the intersection and not have to worry about anyone hitting you at the moment unless someones ready to go as soon as it turns green.
unless you drive around town going 5mph you can still slide. having control over your vehicle and stopping in a split second for a red light is completely different. you may be driving slow enough to swerve out of the way, stop in a relatively quick time but ice and snow and whatnot change that.
just give it up, your posts are irrelevant and just piss people off
i didn’t admit to not being able to control anything. if you can predict the weather and know road conditions so well why aren’t you a weatherman? I am still not justifying going through a redlight. You twist and contort what EVERYONE says to fit your own argument. I honestly don’t care about the camera’s. They will serve their purpose and that will be that. I’m hung up on the fact that you think everyone on the road has complete control of their vehicle at all times. If thats the case you are a complete moron and your head is up your ass. Thinking that you can control everything that happens while you are on the road just shows your stupidity.
Jack you ever been in a city with these?
Ok first off, your all thinking about the pussy way out of these cameras. If you drive a performance car, forget the whole “slam on the brakes at yellow” mind set. I say gun it and beat the red all together! There’s that tipping point of gunning it or hitting the breaks, most of the time, floor it!
Those would kinda be like a trap speed radar trophy.
Actually its illegal to enter an intersection until its clear and previous vehicles have cleared, giving that car the right of way.
It pissed me off to no end when someone sits in the middle of an intersection and damn well knows they couldn’t get through it.
The law says, don’t enter an intersection you can’t get through, sounds like it contradicts the prevous but it doesn’t for some reason that someone explained to me that I don’t remember now. Your also not supposed to block side roads Its an emergency vehicle thing.
Bad weather, run em, your plate is covered by snow, go for it.
I know I can buy “POI’s” or Points of Interest alerts based on red light cameras and speed traps for my Garmin.
Based on the picture, these things snap off pictures at every red cycle, so really it can’t take a picture of your plate if your not in the intersection…I don’t think they have “starting line” staging lights at all these red lights.
I remember getting one in Charlotte a few years ago in the Z with the tops off. I have no objection to these but in Buffalo I do think a bunch of people are going to get undeserving tickets in the winter months.
