Rehoming small dog....help?

NYSpeed, I come to you for help/advice. Hopefully this is in a decent location on the forum.

Here is the problem I have:

I have a small (about 8 lb) male Pomeranian dog, about 3 yrs old, that needs to find a new home.

Ever since my son was born a year ago, the Pomeranian marks his territory everywhere around the house. I find piddle spots everywhere and it is driving me insane. Accidents happen and those I can deal with, but constantly finding spots where he has marked is driving me to a nervous breakdown. It is now at the point where he marks his territory on my son’s things; toys, furniture, blankets, etc. That cannot happen. I do not want my house or my son’s things ruined by this dog. Do not want my son to be in an environment like that Also do not want to be forced to crate the dog 24/7 or lock him in the kitchen 24/7. Turn your head or lose sight of him for a second in the house and there is a new piddle spot found.

Here is the situation surrounding the dog:

Bought from a breeder in Machias, NY.
Lives with my wife, 1 yr old son and I.
We have two other small dogs, both male, both around 10 lbs. One 7 yrs old and one 5 yrs old (Yorkie-poo and mini dachshund)
All 3 dogs are great with the baby. Pomeranian especially loves the baby and baby enjoys the Pomeranian.
All 3 dogs get along with one another.
Other 2 dogs DO NOT mark, piddle or pee, (minus rare accidents if we are gone more than the normal amount of time; forced overtime for example)
Dogs are cared for, fed twice daily and played with daily. Walks during good weather, allowed to run around our small backyard when taken outside regularly to do their business.
Pomeranian loves to run around outside. Loves playing in snow.
Dogs can be alone during the day max 9 hours if both of us are on 8-4, crated when no one is home. NO pee spots or accidents 99% of the time when crated
2-4 days/week dogs have one of us at home at all times. Some weeks at least one of us it with them at all times. Depends on our schedules.
Dogs sleep in our room/our bed every night.
All dogs are neutered.

We have tried just about everything recommended in our research to stop this problem. Neutered. Confinement. Praise when he pees outside. Cleaning with special solutions. Spraying mark-able areas with deterrent. It has gone on too long and happens far too often in places where it absolutely cannot happen.

It is a shame to be forced to find a new home for this dog. Hate having to try to give away such a loving little dog because of a problem we cannot solve. Such a shitty feeling to give away our problem to someone else, but I will go nuts dealing with this forever. However, I cant force the dog to live in a small kitchen or crate its entire life, especially when it is so full of love.

He is a loving little dog. Loves and needs attention. Loves to be cuddly and close to you. Loves to play but can chill on your lap all day. Loves people and our other dogs. Loves the baby. Loves to run.

Been looking today on Craigslist for folks looking for a dog. Any one had any luck with this before? What about animal shelter or SPCA? My wife is against that because she thinks the dog will get euthanized instantly.

So, NYSpeed, what do you suggest? Any help or advice? Any one looking for a dog? Anyone know of anyone looking for a dog? Anyone else have similar issue? Maybe a new owner/new environment would be better for the dog?

Thanks for any help you all can provide.

Little dogs seem to get adopted from shelters/rescues fast. I just checked with the two rescues I work with but we have zero foster space available. Try reaching out to Buffalo Pug & Small Breed? (buffalopug.com)

Pommeranians should have a local rescue group, I know they have a huge group in TX that my uncle belongs to…he has like 4 of them through the group and they really are great dogs.

Good luck with it all.

Lemongrass dog is a very popular dish in some Asian and African countries. Tender dog meat coupled with savory, citrus lemongrass sauce is sure to satisfy any cravings for for this cuisine.

Thanks for the help. Cant bring myself to cool the little dude. Lol

Going to try some belly band/dog diapers that i researched last night. Last ditch effort. Never knew there were diapers for dogs, but apparently they stop/inhibit the dog from going in the house.

Fingers crossed this works.

Sorry I didn’t follow the crowd and do the ultimate hipster, totally cool thing to do and get a rescue dog.

I see no problem buying a dog from a breeder if the situation seems legitimate. We wanted a Pomeranian. We found someone who had them somewhat locally. We picked one from the litter. Had no problems there. Woman worked for local vet clinic so dog was healthy, well taken care of, checked and came with all ppw and shots. We met the mother; cant recall meeting father but i believe he was on premises. Dogs were around other farm-type animals and family members. Environment seemed very nice.

Bought our dachshund from an awesome breeder. She had dozens of awesome dachshunds living on premises. We actually spent most of the day with tjay breeder lol

Point is, Some breeders are legit. Some are not. Some rescues work out. Some do not.

Both dogs mentioned are awesome. But the Pomeranian is fighting to be alpha male amongst 2 other dogs and now feels threatened by the baby. So he marks. I doubt it had anything to do with being bought from a breeder.

Picked up a belly band for him tonight from pets smart. Seems like it will work. Will be ordering more and ones that are more comfortable for him to keep him clean and healthy.

Hate to give him up and have him become someone else’s problem. (Thats why I dislike adopting and rehoming someone else’s dog or rescues).

No advice to really give in your situation besides the fact that, more time should be spent on training especially considering it’s a good dog like you claim. My 60lb rescued Pitbull is house trained while living in the house with another dog and also with my neices and nephew always at my house, too. :gotme:

“Ultimate hipster” you say - what gave it away…maybe my lack of a gaudy mustache? Maybe my lack of a single tattoo? Maybe my properly fit mens pants? I guess the senior citizen who lives on my street who also rescued a pitbull is an ultimate hipster. I’ll be sure to remember that the next time she offers me non-vegan cookies. I know plenty of non-hipsters who have rescued dogs, many on this forum as well. You’ve also followed plenty of “crowds” so easy on the wording Mr.Original.

Using the - “we only want one type of breed” is a poor excuse. @XwalkerX searched up and down until he found a Frenchie rescue. Want a puppy? That’s fine too, @Geehee and myself both rescued our dogs as pups. If you want something bad enough you’ll find a way to make it work instead of taking the easy route; a breeder.

Something about someone buying a dog that rubs me the wrong way. It’s like the parents who think their bratty child should only go to a private school as that simply will only result in success and greatness! No, not how that works. They automatically think they’ve obtained the best of the best, also not the case.

There are MILLIONS of dogs that need to be rescued and the sad part is - if they dont get rescued they will be euthanized (2.7 million a year to be exact). The personal rewards you get from rescuing an animal are great.

Have you tried crate training?
Both of our dogs were crate trained and while they still have their crates the doors never get locked anymore. I know hes a lil older but old dogs can be taught new tricks. just make sure not to oversize his crate.

You could also do what my friends did and get doggy diapers…its not as bad a concept as you might think.

who gives a shit? people have different perspectives or ideas with what they want. If he wants a Pomeranian from a breeder then have at it. Who’s to say that someone might never buy that dog from a breeder and it would need to be “rescued” one day anyway? not all breeders crank out litter after litter of puppies either. of course some people are scum and are trying to cash in all they can with the dogs they have. but i agree with Paul that not everyone is like that. and who’s to say a rescued dog would be that much better? chances are you don’t know

is it shitty that people run puppy mills and whatnot. yes of course it is. But not everyone wants to travel to god knows where and search the country to find the dog they desire.

truth is, someone bred the dog you own at one point.
do you know the exact history of the dog?
where it came from?
how many were along with it in the litter?
the number of litters before that one?

that to me, is the equivalent of saying (on a lesser scale of course) why have your own kid when you can adopt one that needs a family.

dude is trying to come in for advice, not to win a dick swinging argument on whats a better source for getting a dog

I was just thinking this.

But seriously, if the dog is super tiny just find a woman that’s 30+ desperate to have a child, they love this type of shit.

He was getting constructive responses until the snarky comment.

It’s how the dog is trained, the enviorment it is around once obtained - moving forward.

You don’t need to travel far to adpot a desirable dog, I went to the local SPCA. Walker didn’t travel far either, just took some researching. Most pet stores as an example, purchase their dogs from cruel puppy mills. Why would you want to increase the demand of produced animals? Especially when there are plenty of adoptable dogs out there that can do the job if not better. Rescue an animal and let me know how it goes; it makes the unconditional love and loyalty far more rewarding over just another purchase.

My dogs history - the mother was found in the not so greatest parts of Buffalo shot in the head while pregnant. Someone rescued her, she survived then had 11 puppies. She had obvious signs of abuse.

we actually were lined up to get a 1 year old Shiba from the niagara SPCA but they allowed someone else to get it before we could get there that afternoon. so we ended up getting one from a breeder in Mayville NY. we have all the history of the mother and father etc. so yeah its usually cheaper to buy a dog from the SPCA or other rescue places, but not always ideal if you are searching for a particular breed of a dog.

huh, i didnt realize adopting a dog - essentially saving its life and not supporting a perpetual machine of people breeding dogs that lead to more dogs getting put in shelters or out as strays - was a hipster thing to do.

thats just about the dumbest thing i’ve heard lately.

Pretty sure the dumbest thing I’ve heard was coming into a thread about trying to find a dog a home and ripping on him for buying from a breeder.

Reminds of this joke… “A vegetarian who does cross fit with his rescue dog walks into a bar. Which of these things does he bother you about first?”

You got a rescue, good for you. It’s still not for everyone.

Was the vegetarian carrying a knife or pistol?

edit: or a piece of wood.

 well played

:io:

I pooped at work 12 minutes ago…and didn’t shower. Just gettin it in before anyone else.

Man shit got heated. Sorry everyone. Guess my sarcastic hipster comment got taken way too seriously. Forgot the internet is srs bznss. Didnt mean to hurt anyones feelings.

Well I took advice from those on here and another forum I’m on. I do appreciate the help and advice.

I did not come in here to be told that buying a dog from a breeder is wrong and that I should have rescued or adopted or whatever. I am not a bad person for buying from a breeder who I found to be suitable. Im also not less of a person for not saving some other dog. Those who save dogs must be better people, idk. More power to those people I guess.

I started this thread for some advice on my dog who has been great but has started to mark his territory excessively and everywhere due to being low man on the totem pole. We introduced a child into the mix and the Pomeranian has taken it the hardest It seems. Less attention on him due to baby and Pomeranians (at least this one) loves attention.

Right now we are going the route of doggie diaper/belly band/female sanitary pad. Seems to be working!

When the dog has the band on, he cannot and therefor does not mark. Or if he does, it goes into the pad. Band comes off when he goes out to do his business and is completely dry about 80% of the time. Rest of time it has a little bit of pee. Dog comes back in and band goes back on. Pad is changed if theres any wetness on it. Really isn’t too much of a hassle.

We will continue this and buy more bands to have on hand in case he has a large accident and make sure he stays clean and healthy.

And just for the record… In my opinion, kids are better than animals. Well at least my kid is. My kid fuckin rules. There is no greater feeling, IMO than being a dad and caring for a little human being.

Thanks for the help and advice everyone! The problem has been made more livable. My mind is much more at ease. So, thank you.
