Remote connection help

I’m trying to figure this out on my own. I want to be able to connect to a computer at work from home because I love working so much. From what I’ve read, you have to have XP Professional on the computer you’re connecting to, and have to check the “Allow users to connect remotely” box.

Problem is, the analysis computer at work is Windows 2000. Is it possible to connect remotely to it? I downloaded Remote Desktop for it, but wouldn’t that be for connecting FROM it? The VPN access is setup already.

I really need to work in the evenings to pay for the engine rebuild… I mean, to get my analysis done.

If you are using VPN… that should connect you to the company not the PC. To connect to the PC you can use either VNC (free download from the internet… but very unsecure) or PC Anywhere.
What VPN are you using and what exactly do you need from your work PC?

hey jeff

what are you trying to do? a vpn is basically a security tunnel to the networok… so you can do shit like \jeffspc\sharedfiles and work on files from a browser… if you want to remote into the computer to specifically run software or something, you can do something like what newchic said… we need to know what you’re tryin to do?

Windows 2000 uses a program called “terminal services” as opposed to the WindowsXP “remote desktop”. You will need to install and activate the terminal services on the 2000 machine and install the client on your XP machine to access it (I think the files are on the win2000 CD). It’s been a while since I used it but if you google it, you can probably find what your looking for.

I have VPN access just to access our network. I need to get to a specific computer to run software on it like I’m sitting at the computer. I did it at work today from the analysis computer (Windows 2000) to my office PC (Windows XP Pro) using Remote Desktop. I need to go the other way though, home PC (Windows XP) to the analysis computer (Windows 2000).

I knew about PC Anywhere but I don’t know if we have any extra copies at work, that’s why I was trying Remote Desktop. The best solution would be for them to upgrade to Windows XP Pro instead of 2000.

And to make it worse, there are floating IP addresses so I have to remember to check it before leaving work in case someone rebooted.

If you are using the VPN from your home machine to connect to your employer… you should be able to use the VNC (free download) to connect to the specific machine to use the software on it. It should be secure enough since you are already in the network.
This should be what you need…

Sonny… please chime in… in case I’m on the wrong path.

ping by computer name when you hit the network… it’ll resolve the IP, then connect

I will do both of things. Thanks!

hells yeah

i use dameware but have licensing… any remote will work you can get remote desktop to work if you allow it in teh firewall (xpsp2)

uh oh… you made me feel smart… I’m sure to do something dumb now…

I have VPN access and can ping the computer I need. I installed the VNC software, but when i try to connect it says Connection Refused. Do I have to have VNC on the computer at work also?

Can you tell I know just enough to get into trouble?

Yes you need it installed on the PC at work too. There should be two different options… one is app mode… I think that is the one for the work PC.

It’s like Pitcher and Catcher in baseball. Home machine is Pitcher and work machine is catcher.

Yes you do know enough to be dangerous… I deal with folks like you all the time.

I’m the helpdesk…

Oh… one more thing… If you don’t want anyone at work to see what you’re doing to the work machine while you are at home… be sure to turn the monitor off. For example: If you don’t want the cleaning lady reading your e-mail… shut the monitor off because she will be able to see everything you’re doing… just as if you were sitting at the machine working.

you need to push down the install on connect… its’ an option… atleast in dameware

you can do it all remotely… also, you can open an MMC console (run ->mmc / file add snap in) and go to services and connect to ‘another machine’ and input your computer name, then start the computer browser service and the server service (although it’ll be started)

That’s what I thought and was afraid of. We can’t install software. Usually our IT guy will give me permission to do stuff, but we’re now under the command of a bigger parent company who has everything on lockdown.

Well fuck me. If they won’t upgrade to XP or let me install this maybe I’ll just offer to buy XP on my own for $200. I’ll probably save that much in gas instead of driving in on the weekends to godforsaken Swissvale/Rankin/Edgewood area.

Thanks for all your help.
