Wawanessa is only willing to give me PLPD insurance on my RHD car. I dont want collision but some fire, theft, vandalism would be nice. Anybody else run into this? Just curious if any other insurance carriers are doing this and if any of you know where to look for other insurance.
Thanks Tony
call morgex, or TD insurance(not sure about meloche monnex), they were more then willing to do my skyline.
morgex was on par with every other insurance company as far as PLPD went, and offered facility coverage. TD has no facility coverages, but was considerable cheaper for insurance based on my driving record.
call monarch insurance real good rates and they will insure your rhd …i drive a jdm silvia and was having problems looking for insurance …i tried td … they wouldnt do it… try callin monarch insurance brokers lmitied… their # is (780) 643 8012 ask them to quote you…their adress is 7633 50th st edmonton
im with ama and i got the same problem with my 180 man.
but my friend has a 180 and is insured with wawanesa and he has fire/theft/vandalism.
Yeah I am with ama too and I cant get collision or anything either its pretty shitty!
Odd, the only problem i had was they would only give me the equivalent to whatever north american car they had, the silvia went under 240 coupe, but that’s a long time ago. But that was the only way i could have fire/theft.
I hope you dont have any problems because if they have it down as a 240 coupe and they see it is RHD you probably wont get your pay out… Id look into that.
Are you 100% sure of that because I am a very good client of theirs 3 cars and a house under them. I have been with them since I got my first car at 17. With no claims or tickets. If they are picking and choosing who gets Fire and Theft with a RHD car. I am going to lose it.
That was a few years ago, haven’t owned a rhd in awhile.
They must be getting tighter with these laws, I used to own a skyline and had full coverage with my broker no problems or questions asked, I was also the first person to insure a JDM with my particular broker so maybe that’s why it was so easy. They must be starting to realize that most of these JDM’s are just Japans way of recycling cars they no longer have room for…I work in the auto service industry and the biggest prob I see is people thinking that their JDM is worth tons, but the sad fact still remains that they are still 15+ year old cars in some cases and are not worth anything by today’s standards. Not trying to bash, I miss my old RHD, but I think most insurance companies don’t want to deal with JDM’s cause they have no real idea how to insure these cars.
I deal with State Farm (James Ulan) 9343 50 St NW 780-469-6900
I have full coverage on my 180sx, $10 Mill Liability, collision, fire, theft, vandalism and a $500 deductible. I am paying around $1200 for the year. I was shopping around a few months ago and the first question every other place asked was… is it modified? I quit shopping around!! This place didn’t even ask, as long as you got your OOP (if imported) or your inspection report.
I hope this helps ya guys out!!
insurance people are such N00bs. I had 1 from co operators tell me that if you put different rims/tires on than the factory one…it is modified for street racing… LOL.
I miss my ICBC insurance
Hey be nice to insurance people! They hate is just as much as you do. I work for a corporate insurance broker and it all depends on what type of appetite for risk each insurance company has. As times are changing a lot of insurance companies will start to harden, meaning they will be more geared to lower risks, an increase premiums for higher ones. It still is a soft market so you can get away with specific coverages if you’ve been with them for a while. But be prepared.
As regards for insurance companies not knowing a lot about vehicles, it’s true, but you have to understand that ratings for vehicle insurance is regulated by the Government. They are just doing what the higher-ups say is so. Unfortunately you’ll never NOT need insurance, it’s better to take the bitter pill in one big swallow than chewing it in your mouth for a while.

I found when I shopped I asked what there definition of modified was…I personally found that most insurance companies version of modified is Nitrous, adding a Turbo to a NA car. I told the I had H/I/E/pulley and they didn’t consider that modified as those are considered replacement parts for the car even though performance is improved. So I dunno…But that was my experience.
