ring of death on my xbox.....help me please

So my xbox has aquirred the dreaded ring of death i dont get it it jus decided to stop working mid game…so now my day is ruined and im wondering if anyone has an idea or knows someone who knows someone who can fix it…any help will be greatly appreciated

how bout some more info. Whats the error code it gives, if any?. And im assuming this is for the 360?

yes it is the 360 there is no error code it gives simply the “ring of death” three of the four quadrants red instead of the usual green. online i was reading its a soldering issue im guessing maybe no one else has had the pleasure of this default. i was jus curious if someone had been lucky enough to beat this as from what i have been told if i cant find someone to fix it my 360 is done.

edit: on a side note if no one can help this may not be all bad the broken 360’s are goin for about 150 on ebay

call them up. They sent me a brand new one twice with no problems

i had an early gen unit and am on my third…but all warranty service.

you can:

  1. ms recently extended the basic warranty on early gen 360’s. look into this first if your unit applies

  2. http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-6910389051301515628&hl=en

^damn how would doing that make it work?

early gen units…rumor was that some were produced too quickly for holiday season and with poor QA from one of their overseas factories…thus bad soldering points. that, and the heat shield foil causes condensation and combined with high temp change eventually cracks the poor connections.
this is not limited to just a handful of units, and the fix is well known. that is why a broken xbox still goes for about $150 on ebay…because you can fix it for about $15

call up microsoft, my buddy has one and called and his missed the free replacement date by 18 days. They quotes him $140 to fix it through them.

There are a ton of writeups online on how to fix this. But I would call them up first to see if they will replace it.

mine is about 6 months old so idk if this is the cause but the 15 dollar fix if you could send me some details on that…it would be greatly appreciated

if it’s 6 mos old you should still be under warranty. call the 800 number.

as for the $15 fix…look a few posts up (post #5). i posted the google video link.

i got my 360 via the back of a truck so i dont believe im qualified for the warranty, and im not so skilled in electronical repair as you can tell if you read my task manager thread so if any one has a friend who knows what he is doing let me know

it’s a heat gun fix…move it in a circular motion…just follow the vid.

this isn’t really a electronic repair that requires great skill.

bump

can any one help me with ideas other than do it myself i miss my xbox so much ive resorted to playstation one

ORRR you could buy a new one, put your old one in the box and return

SHIT! My Xbox 360 just gave me the ring of death today!!

I was watching Southpark on it the other day and everything was fine. Then it froze up. No big deal, I just went to bed. Then tonight I turned it on and was on the dashboard for a little bit and it froze again. So I did a hard shut down and then tried to turn it back on…3 quadrants filled with red.

So I shut it off and tried again. Again 3 quads of red. So I searched out this thread did a little reading, went back to try it again and everything was fine.

I am not sure if I should pursue any kind of corrective action with Microsoft or not. I’m thinking yes because I feel that the system is unreliable now. I did just finish watching Southpark and playing 2 games of hockey, but still…

On a related note, my PS3 that I have had longer than my Xbox is work flawlessly.

Jay, just call up microsoft, ship that thing out, its not worth the headaches to keep dealing with that.

And thats great your PS3 is working great, now if you could just get a sweet game for it to actually have a reason to turn it on, then that would rock. :uhh:

Aw bastard!! Actually I’ve been playing it more than Xbox lately. I picked up Fight Night which is pretty sweet and I just downloaded Tekken 5.

yeah i have read that xbox will send you refurbs and some BS when you send yours in for warrenty. i havent had any issues yet, but good luck.

It’s weird because I had mine freeze twice and then I got the ring of death. Then it started working again and I was using it for several hours tonight. First I watch disc 1 of Arrested Development, then I play 4 games of hockey. Not a single problem.

I didn’t think this was a condition that would go away.
