Here is a question for anyone in construction. We had a company come out to replace some slate on our roof. Bill was for $1080. Terms were to be paid in full upon completion of the job. The crew that was sent out was professional and I was happy with the work they did and what they could tell me about the shape of the roof, which was, it was not good. They were confident that they got all of the leaks though.
One week later I called them back saying we still had a leak in the front, as that is the one that I noticed. The guy that does the estimating sent a different crew out to fix it. They came and actually got it right.
One day later it rained hard again and I found a leak in an area they had already gone over. I called the company back and the same guy that quoted the original work said he would send a crew over and he would be over to discuss some other options.
It gets good… He never came out to re-quote what the guys did the 3rd time they were here. We never received any addendum to the original quote in writing, nor verbally over the phone. A week after the crew came out for the 3rd time, we get a bill for $318.
I understand that there are things that get found when a crew is up there vs. what you can see from the ground. I also understand that the unexpected happens with home projects. That said, am I really obligated to pay this? If we had been told that we were going to be charged more, we would have persued other options. My wife and I were under the assumption that the work was still being done under the original contract. We signed nothing after the initial contract. The initial work is paid in full.
Well your expecting it to be done the first time, sure things pop up. 3 times to do a roof. slate or not is way to much. tell them to take you to small claims and go fuck themself.
I’m not sure how they handle their crews as it was two different pairs of guys that came out.
So I’m a little pissed that I still have a leak in the back, my assumption being that the leaks would be fixed even though the original quote never actually says fix leaks. The fact that we were never given an update to the original quote, or a new quote, verbally or in writing is what is pissing me off the most.
roof is currently slate. The $1080 quote was to repair broken slate, caulk ridge flashing, chimney flashing and pipe flashing. The hope was that the repair would fix the leaks for a couple of months until we could get a tear-off asphalt shingle job done. If we have to pay this extra $318, that is $1400 that could have gone into a brand new roof.
Not sure about your first question, but if you do end up ripping off the slate, be sure to get someone to pay you for the shingles they end up taking off. They will likely get re-used if they are still in decent shape.
