I’ve been battling high oil consumption since I put on a bigger turbo and ran higher boost. I’ve tried many different oils, the standards, mobile1 multiple weights, castrol, amsoil, and never found much of a difference. My car is a dd so I never wanted to use anything too expensive. I would go though almost a litter every 1000km and turn oil black in a matter of a week. I tired all kinds of pcv methods to see if it was blow by. I tired different ways to get the oil out of the turbo, in case it was pushing past the seals and nothing I did ever made a difference. Spark plugs always have looked good and my compression is very good.
So I finally tried rottella, and wtf I haven’t burnt a drop of oil in 2500km and its still looks as new as when I put it in. I have tried mutliple oils at this weight and even up to 50’s with no success so why is rottella not burning up on me? Is there a problem with my rings, possible oil control ring issue? that this is now covering up? I’m not complaining at all but I’m trying to understand why this oil is so good, atleast in my engine.
its a veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyy good oil. especially for SRs. No idea why its good. but it does have a tendency of keeping its viscosity and not thinning out due to heat. its good oil, keep running it.
burning oil can be from bad valve seals and over bore valve guides as well as pcv and rings. thicker oil or additives that make oil thick make the mixture of oil thicker by having bigger molecular diameter(pardon if the term is wrong but thats the jst of it), the thicker oil has less of an ability to flow throu tight places(like oil seals) that means it would less oil pass seal=less oil burned. but it has side effects the side effects being that the thickening can be up to a point after that the flow of oil to the engine main bearings slow down and thins out, then u get spun bearings and a.k.a blown engines.
I’m pretty sure my oil control rings are on there way out. I’ve put close to 90,000km on my sr since owning it and I’m not really sure what it was at when purchased. I fixed up my head last winter so its not the valve guides or seals and like I said in my first post I’ve tired a lots of difference pcv, catch can set ups with no change. The rottella has started to burn off a little, I can handle this amount of burn, but 10 40 mobile 1 wasn’t holding up at all like rottella is. I might try some seafoam in the crank case to see if I can pull some carbon off the rings but it’s most likely rebuild time for my bottom end.
