Thats correct, which means the body will actually last 25 years.
The longest I’ve ever kept a car was 3 years, so that’s not enough to sell me.
the body lasting 25 years means nothing…i have an 87 Trans Am and there is NO rust on it…60,xxx miles and its now almost 21 years old with no rust, you cant try and sell someone on the body lasting 25 years…what about the american cars over 30 years old with no rust?..and Hondas…they may rust but my winter car has 250,xxx miles and runs awesome :banana ;D
mentioning a car that rarely gets driven and never sees a winter is terribly misleading and proves absolutely nothing.
except it was owned by an old lady and was driven in the winter at some point
yeah, to church every sunday, right? 1987 with 60K owned by old lady… if was obviously rarely driven and if you think some old lady that rarely drives her car will willingly go out in the winter then you are a fool. I’m sure it happened, but i bet it was damn near garage kept.
^^^right on the money^^^
Every VW i own has seen a winter for every year of it’s life and are pretty fucking solid. Fuck i don’t need to even prove this, german cars just last longer it’s a known fact. There owners are usually more worried about upkeep and protecting they’re investment. Not to mention they’re steel is thicker and of much better quality. I wont argue that a jap motor is possibly more reliable but the european cars are just nicer. I see way more old beemers and VW’s than any old japanese car, and believe me i’m not ignoring the japanese cars there out there, but everyday i’m on the road i see alot of old german metal.
Don’t you work at a VW shop or something? If so it doesn’t come as a shock that you see more German cars.
Totally confused, actually i work for a mazda/vw dealer, so i see alot of bad jap engineering. Like i said before, to each is own, but i can tell quality when i see it, you would have to be blind not to.
p.s. i meant on the road driving during the day and my commute.
I’ve owned a couple of a Honda’s and a ton of Volkswagen’s. All my Honda’s had some serious rust issues where as my Volkswagen’s really didn’t have too much rust at all. I do admit though that the Honda’s ran with much less maintenance upkeep then my Volkswagen’s.
How did this become a seperate thread anyway?
idk but i think the conclusion is rested as japanese and american require way less maintenance and are more reliable than german ;D :banana :ahh :benny :bore :wierd :matrix
and that german made car bodies are stronger and look better after the years :bowdown :banana
mines galvanized, im set to go :nod
Cooley? I’ve been there a bunch. If that’s the place, I’ve probably met you and never known it was you.
well my vw has a 2 small rust spots by the window on the pillar thing touching the window but the body has like 160kmi and the person who owned it before me (not you joe the person before you) didnt treat his car very well, anyone know how much it costs to get like two 1in rust spots fixed?
i’d have to agree, generally japanese metal’s seem a little weaker, where as compared to the construction of a german car, the german bodies are way more robust. the undercoating that i’ve seen on german cars is excellent. nothing i have encountered in all my years of wrenching has looked so preserved. of course there is exceptions by all means. but generally, IMO, vw and bmw really over build they’re cars, but in a good way. my 24+ year old 5 series was a testament to this. the car was abused big time by its previous owners, yet looked immaculate in the sheet metal department. i bought the car for a measly $400.00 with the intention of only using it as a daily beater, and when it stood up to everything i threw at it, including a lady rear ending me hard in an explorer. this car was involved in 4 total impacts, and still drove away the same as before.
bet by my user name you guys thought i was going to praise mg’s or something huh? LOL ;D
It a trade off. Many japanese cars are cheaper, lighter, and more econmical due to the steal being thin and sometimes not the best of quality. I dont think honda really expected a 90 civic to last 20 years. They just wanted it to last 10 and be a good maintenance free car for those years. On the plus side, we get crazy fast imports because its easier to make a civic fast at 2200lbs than my Huge GTP at 3600lbs. I went to look at another GTP in Amsterico with 206k on it. The car ran like a champ and the interior was clean. Just about 100% mech condition but the body had big chunks of paint missing right down to bare metal and it was barely rusting. Whatever GM coated that car with is working unfortunately the paint was far less to be desired.
old thread. ;D
i think they both rust as equal, no situation is the same so it would be hard to tell.
